PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

This was sent to me as a private e-mail and I thought everyone would like to read it so I asked for, and received, permisison to post it after editing a few bits out. I hope the thread doesn't turn into another slinging match.

Rosy, went to training today just to fly the flag.

Very disappointing as there were only about 40 spectators. Know *smile* Clay to talk to and he was there to show support as well. He is the mentor to Pettifer and Deledio. Had a very frank discussion for 2 hours with *smile* (actually 3 with the train trip). He virtually agrees with most of what has been said re skills, intensity, mongrel and judgement. Made lots of comment on basic things like where you stand for your forward and protecting the corridor. Fan of Deledio but said he has to learn to break taggers like Ling. In his day Burgin or Mike Perry would soften up the taggers until they backed off a bit.

*smile* and I were standing together on the terraces about 2 metres from the boundary and the WHOLE Richmond team went by and shouted, whistled and cheered. We were the only people for 50 metres BUT I SUSPECT IT WAS FOR *smile* NOT ME !!!

Training was average – they all try and run hard but skills still let them down. Made 6 straight kicking errors in one drill for the two groups training in front of us. They are very quiet – call to and encourage each other for the ball when the drills are on but no loud banter etc when in a group.

EXCEPTION – Jack, the only player on the ground with a baseball cap on backwards. When groups come together he wanders around giving slaps, hi 5’s etc. Shouts congratulations to senior players if the do something well. He is an ABSOLUTE EXTROVERT and it is great to see. He genuinely beat Rawlings 3 successive times in one drill with Pettifer kicking to Rawlings and an opponent 20 metres from goal. The only one in the group to win easily.

Jack is a biggish lad and could play a f lanking position. Good hands, smart football wise, throws himself forward and marks inches from the ground even in training. Genuinely beat Rawlings body on body then was clever and got away from him to mark.

Cleve Hughes did some kicking practice and is a gem of a kick. Neither he nor the ball deviate from a straight line. Pettifer kicked 6 straight from 40 + metres on the angle. He is too good a kick and mark to let go – he only has to work harder. Meyer moves beautifully (like Wanganeen) but is very quite – almost like a mouse.

Richardson was doing ruck training with Monkhorst – hope they aren’t going to run him on the ball. Patterson did some nice things but he is small for the ruck. Graham showed some good things THEN he was easily beaten next minute.

Simmonds, Schulz, Bowden2, Coughlan all rode the bikes. Schulz almost hobbled after the ball in one handball drill. Tambling ran up and down the wing with Petersen then they had their own kick to kick. Petersen looks much bigger in the chest than Tambling. They both made ball handling look easy.

They were obviously trying to get multiple leading forward options in one drill. McCrae and Rawlings were 65 m out on each flank and they would kick to a leading option in the group that included Richardson. There were plenty of leads BUT they would NOT kick straight in to some leads even if they were free, they would kick to each other and the leads would then have to go to someone on the other side. Sometimes Rawlings and McCrae kicked to each other 3 -4 times before picking out a leading forward. (McCrae is a lovely kick).

Brown did most of the training but he seems to favour his right leg. The left calf muscle is noticeable bigger than the calf of the right leg.

Petersen was at the Social Club the other night and he is extremely well spoken and amazed everybody when asked of his favourite spots. He nominated several places in Europe and the US. He travelled overseas for 10 weeks with his parents.

Can’t get over Jack – when *smile* was talking to Deledio and Pettifer all the other players moved inside but Jack strolled up to the group with a puzzled look on his face, stuck a hand out and said “I’m Jack”. He won’t ever die wondering

We will do better next week – might not win but there will be a lot of determined Tigers out on the ground. They are hurting badly !
