Troy Simmonds - Will he ever recapture his 2006 form?

That's the big IF Goodies, as has been mentioned earlier in the thread there are ongoing concerns over his health.

One hopes that we didn't stuff his leg completely by getting him to play games where he clearly wasn't fit.

Life is full of IFs. Let's wait and see how he gets through pe-season. What are the ongoing concerns with his health?

See my first post. Pharace seems the medical expert. ;D
Obviously I hope his opinion is incorrect.

It'd be great to hear the club come out and say he's on target for round 1. ;)

Good point ToO
Otherwise Bozo's just feed on the rumours

He wont be fit or up to his peak until next pre-season, but he will play better in the second half. He didnt look fit or even interested at time this year. Lets hope he recovers well.

I'm sure Troy's very determined to, we can only hope he is given ample time to be fully fit & strong, not just put in to fill the position. Hopefully selectors get it right, unlike this year when he played when clearly he was struggling with injury. Don't just trot out the line "Troys' health is the important thing here, playing footy is secondary" then play him regardless like they did this year.
Fully fit, healthy & strong TS argueably our most important player imo

LOL, I'm only an expert based on my own experiences, like many here I suspect. Lost my mum to a blood clot complication so have made it my business to know a bit about it. The strain the heart is enormous. Don't know how to do the article quote thingy, but there was a decent article on Troy as follows:

Simmonds lucky to be alive
14 September 2007 Herald Sun
Mark Stevens

Troy is the single biggest loss to the Tigers - as proven over the 2007 season. The article said he was fit, which is a great sign, but I would like to think he goes alright under stress tests before saying he is fit. What his big heart (and he has a ripper IMO) can now handle will only be known in the months to come. On the very positive, the time out may have assisted his ankle in ways not previously acheiveable.

With him fit and firing all season, we are potential finalists, without him we are 13-16 again. He is a classic tempo player, building it though a whole game. He has to start on the ball. That is how important not only his rucking is, but his work around the ground. Rate him better around the ground than Cox. But he has to "get into the game" to be effective - as proved by his efforts at CHF in 2005.

WOW nicely said.

See we actually do agree on something occaisionally. :hihi

His presence around the ground is one of the biggest keys for us winning games IMO. Very noticable this year.

I pray for him to get to his 2006 level again.

The key to Simmonds is how many miles he can get inot his legs over the summer.

Even at his best I am not sure if he is a top flight ruckman, in terms of hitouts to advantage and pure ruck work. He is at his best one is on his bike and running to be a linkman. A lot of his marks are out wide on the wings pushing out into space. I would like to start out wide and push into the centre square. A ruckman with the capacity to be linkman in the corridor and pushing forward is much more dangerous then any other type of ruckman. You need two quality ruckman to be a finals side. One must be able to be a mobile linkman who can get forward of the ball and your second option needs to be a body based contact ruckman. Our list is not structure propally in terms of rucks, we all know that. Although I am excited about the Trent Cotchin era if Kruezer was on that board it would take mea millisecond to spit his name out. We are lacking a ruckamn between Simmonds and Patto/Gus and I have my question marks about the latter too. Dean Putt is looming as a important pick at 51 in the upcoming draft. We need to take one ruck in the national draft and at least one in the rookie draft.

another thing SImmo does well is even though he is so-so in the ruck he is above average once the ball is on the ground so he sometimes get a bonus clearance or two a game by his own roving work. All in all, he may not to be in the very elite group, but when fit is better no 1 ruck than most in AFL on any given weekend.

If people are going to judge players when they are 100% fit and in 100% full form then that's their prerogative, but reality says that the really good players are still good in a number of seasons where they are not fully fit or right in form.

Hoping that players will regain the form that they have managed to display at their best is just that, hope, and not something to base any realistic expectations on - and the longer since that good form, the less likely it is to reappear.

Simmonds was good at clearances in 2006, he was also hopeless at them in 2005 when he continually just stood back after one contest and watched the game go by, neither of those two seasons has any relevance to what might happen in 2008.

Good point David. IIRC he did a lot of work in preseason 2006 to alter his body shape and fitness to cope with the demands of ruckwork. 2007 was a tragedy for him and is best forgotten.

One thing I really admire about Troy is his motivation and work ethic. We desperately need him fit and leading the way. I'd also like to see him asserting more physical authority. We need it and he can deliver it. In one game against the Saints we were copping our usual thrashing from them. Riewoldt got a bit cocky and started pushing Troy around a little...... showing him scant respect. Troy ripped a couple of vicious judo/karate type chops into Nick's sternum region. He winched in agony and his eyes showed genuine fear.

Give us more of that please Troy...... and all the best wishes for season 2008.

Disappointing post pharace.
After your sortee that inspired this thread, I at the very least took you as a medical professional. :hihi
I even thought that you might be Troy's Doc filling us in. ;)
