A point, if I may, directly towards Vickery.
I'm not quite sure how important he thinks he is to the structure of the team but he is ......, extremely important.
Vickery did some nice things the other night, although there were some kicking blunders early on. The key was his improved mobility around the ground, as well as being that 200cm target up forward.
My advice to him would to be absolutely and fully conscious of the fact that being 200cm makes him one of about 2 or 3 vital target players in the team. Arguably more important a target than Jack Reiwoldt.
It means that every time the ball is gained within 50-60 metres of his area, he must be in a position to make himself a marking target.
I noticed a few too many times that the boys did gain possession within 50-60 metres of Vickery. They looked to him as a target, they looked for him, but his lack of awareness placed him in a position not to receive.
There was no better example than a I.Maric mark in the 2nd quarter, on a HBF, where his best target should have been Vickery on a wing. Vickery's lack of awareness had him running towards goal, with his back turned on Maric. Other running players can run back to position, but a 200cm target needs to have the awareness to place himself in the position to immediately receive a kick. Maric kicked it to Vickery anyway, 'cause he had to. Vickery, unaware till the last moment, lost it and a turnover resulted.
To Vickery, I implore. You are a mobile 200cm player with good marking and kicking skills that other 200+cm players on the list don't have. You need to be constantly aware that you are a marking link in play. You need to make yourself a constant marking target. Players are looking for you and need you to be constantly aware.
As a CHF target, you can come right up to the back end of the centre square to be the target. But be aware that you are always that target, make yourself a target and be prepared to receive.
I hope someone actually in contact with Vickery passes this on.
