Interesting data on early voting - these are from Senate battleground states but most are in play for the Presidential race as well. Texas - 86.9%

Florida not in this set but apparently around 68% voted early.

People seem highly motivated to vote early - this means they want to avoid Covid on the 4th and/or they have already made up their minds. Texas is never Blue but I'll be watching with interest on election day.

The senate race is critical - a real chance for the Dems to flip the senate which will be critical given Trump has stacked the SCOTUS with religious nutjobs now.

Senate is important but Democrats also need to be competing hard for State Houses as that is where the voter deregistration laws, the gerrymandering and the laws restricting abortion are passed. No challenge regarding Roe v Wade can go to the Supreme Court unless a state passes a law restricting/banning abortion and someone challenges it.

True. The Republicans have really screwed the pooch - should have put distance between themselves and Trump a lot earlier.

They have arguably won though given the Supreme Court will be dominated by Republic appointees for a generation.

This is a real worry, and they have also stacked the Federal Courts one level below the Supreme Court.

Won in that area of government/institutions, yeah. You never know, the Dems could pull something shady like increase the size of the court and rebalance. The other thing that needs addressing is voter disenfranchising - but this will be tough too in red states.

It's a sad situation when inexperienced charlatans like Kananaugh and Barrett are appointed for totally partisan reasons - simply because they will do the bidding of the current president. The Dems always appointed progressive judges but at least they had long experience and were generally well respected in the profession.

I think I read that Barrett hadn't ever presided over a case. Anyone know if that is correct?

If so... debacle!

Not quite... she served as a lawyer, then an academic. In 2017 Trump appointed her to the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit where she heard appeal cases. Then she got the bump up to SCOTUS.

Quote from Trump:

We're not going to have a socialist president, especially a female socialist president, we're not going to have it, we're not going to put up with it," he said.

So, apart from the fact he wouldn't know what a socialist is, he clearly doesn't like women.

F Me, why would any women vote for him with that attitude?

Read a report that the US election this year is going to costs US$14bn or about US$50 / resident of the US.

Compared to Australia, we spent A$372.5m on the 2019 election or about A$15 / resident of Australia.

The higher cost is crazy, thats around 4 times what we spend per capita on elections which I find astounding. What a way to *smile* money straight down the drain.
