Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Morris gets a clear hands-in-the-back in the 2nd qtr - Jetta even looked at the umpire waiting for him to blow the whistle, didn't happen, goal.

Watson in the 2nd qtr picks the ball up hunched over and 'runs into' one of our guys (who couldn't do anything else but tackle him front on) - free for too high and a shot for goal.

3rd qtr Maric goes to protect the ball but doesn't take clear possession, Stanton drags it into him - Maric pinged for holding it then 50 for giving it to the umpire.

Late 3rd qtr Bomber's player is running with the ball with plenty of time to dispose of it, gets tackled from behind, drops the ball, play-on and goal to put them 23 pts up at 3 qtr time.

Those 2 decisions in the 2nd qtr were what helped Essendon get the jump on us.

That non-decision late in the 3rd could have been crucial with the way we came back at them in the last qtr.

Those decisions had a direct effect on the scoring during the game - it doesn't excuse our players from some of the shocking turnovers and missed shots for goal - especially the one missed by Miller to get us back to 4 points after the Bombers had got the lead back off us halfway through the last qtr and the poor kick from Cotch from fullback that got chopped of by Monfries that resulted in a goal.

It was a bit like the West Coast game, I thought they should win on the form they had going into the game, but we could beat them. Poor kicking in both games have cost us a chance to be 5-3 and a spot in the 8 probably. Fair enough Essendon out-played us in the 1st half with the help of the umps, but we smashed them in inside 50's in the 2nd half, but couldn't put the score on the board.

End of rant.

i think 1 of those 2 frees in the first half was for out on the full. the advantages given were horrible and lets not talk about the maric incident. hocking getting caught with the ball made my head explode.

putrid umpiring

It frustrates me no end when the natural flow of play is cmpletely changed by a free kick whistle and then dvantage rule paid. Caught out a couple of times and it's fine to say players should continue to play until the ball is dead but it is natural to stop or at least prop to find out the outcome of a whistle being blown. I really think the only way to solve this is to not blow the whistle until it's clear there was no advantage.

wasnt happy with stanton and watson ducking their heads clearly and getting frees.

last week wouldnt have gotten them as umires were told not to pay frees to ducking players

What about the 50 m penalty that wasn't given in the last for interference after taking the mark? I think it was davey. The incident was on par with Friday nights to fasolo.

Yep another one. I thought if you impede a player in any way after taking the mark it's a 50? Apprently not, only sometimes.

Were we going crook about the inept umpiring when the down the ground umpire overruled and paid Jack a mark?
Yes ,yes we were as he was taken high & had his arm chopped & neither decision was paid. Being paid the mark when he didn't take it came after both incidents.

If the AFL continue to condone this type of action, one day it will result in a player receiving a serious long term injury. If the AFL are "serious" about the head being protected then they must make this type of action illegal, not reward it. When a player deliberately ducks their head and charges into an opponent it must be a free against.

There was some pretty ordinary umpiring, and yes from my biased point of view it did seem to hurt the Tigers more than the Bombers, but what really cost Richmond the game was allowing Essendon to get out to a 7 goal lead and then inaccurate finishing in front of goal when they had all the momentum.

Good luck enforcing this rule. To me the better idea is to just call play on for incidental head high contact. The practise of leading with your head will quickly stop. Then again you are TheUmpire so probably know better than me ;D

no we dont but i tell ya good to see the security guards cop it like that (and im not condoning this violence) but who do they think they are punching a guy whos on the ground who cant defend himself, fair enough pin him down for pitch invasion and escort him out but gee thats p!ss poor by the security guards and the crowd thought so too and went ape sh!t not sorry at all for the belting the security guys got after that and a few of them ran away with their tails between there legs....ahh roles reversed normally its security guards out numbering whoever they apprehend this time they got theirs back....

I couldn't stand to watch while Essendon sung their song, but I bet the umpires were in there singing it with them!

Its plain as day - look at the final scores - the umps didnt win the game for essendon, richmond lost the game. In particular, the forwards. 15.19.109 says it all.

shattered we lost. The improvement is a bitter sweet pill - glad we're improving but we arent good enough yet. This season is kind of a holding pattern with some tangible improvements visible around the periphery - next year we should see a meteoric rise.

Yes it would be difficult but if each time we currently hear the umpire say "play on you ducked" (i.e. the umpires already have to make a decision) instead a free kick was payed against "free kick for deliberately ducking head first into a player" I believe that it would lead to fewer players ducking (at the moment it's no risk all reward) and an easier game to umpire. More importantly from the AFL's perspective it would lead to fewer head/neck injuries which is their ultimate agenda.

unfortunately & obviously "poor" umpiring has been happening for 115 years at all levels in any comp in Australia.
I think the question is why. Why does it happen? Why has it happened for so long? Why, when to seemingly everyone else what the decision should be, doesn't it get paid correctly? I don't think the rules are that hard are they? Too high, dropping the ball & in the back can't possibly be that hard to see surely. So why the bloody hell does it happen?
Is it the Head of Umpires at the AFL? Then why does it happen in the local league too. Thats not the Geeshes fault.
Nup, It's never gunna change. The "numb nuts" have to make a split second decision with 80.000 people screaming at him what to do with 40 blokes yelling in his ear to look at the replay to see where he stuffed up. But he will never EVER change his decision. I learnt that in the under 10's.
We all have to live with his stupidity at that moment, we'll discuss it at length, then watch next weeks game to see them probably do it again.
Yelling abuse at umpires & picking out the decisions that didn't suit us at the time? It's all part & parcel of our game. The umps know it, the players know it & we all know it.
I also know I love it. ;)

The difference between us and someone like Collingwood in this situation is that the Pies heirachy would make waves about this. We on the other hand just seem to take it on the chin. Even Norf Melb get into the umpiring.

What about the ones they didn't pay?
Essendon ducked the head all the time and got rewarded.

Early in the season Holding the ball was being paid.

Then all of a sudden they change the rulebook again.

The game last night was lost and won in the first quarter.
Bannister BOG for the Dons.

The umpiring was an absolute disgrace. What irritated me the most was the 2 free kicks Watson got for ducking the head right in front of goal. The second one was appalling and resulted in an easy goal. Watson just picked up the ball in front of the Richmond player, burrowed his head into the Richmond's players sternum and got a free kick. The Richmond player didn't even tackle him, move towards him, or get his hands on Watson's head.

I was yelling out what a disgrace it was, and I had some nuff nuff Essendon supporters trying to convince me that it was there because it was too high. When it came on the screen a few times, even they finally admitted it wasn't there as Watson wasn't even tackled.
