What a supreme display of technical incompetence, ignorance, and "take that you filthy animal", by the 2021 cohort of AFL Umpires.
I can't recall a more baffling, bemusing, stupefying, frustrating, and downright ridiculous array of decisions, non-decisions, blatant back-handers to the rule book, and imaginary tricks, pulled from the deep rectal recesses of the majority on this list.

What a stuff-up. What a ride Steven, what a ride. Thank-you. The world thanks you for your contribution in guiding this glorious game to the dizzying heights we are now at. And where the hell did you hide Ray?

I think part of the point is - if, as is claimed, it is within our control how many free kicks we give away each game and this is determined by the way we play; how is it that all other teams seem to give away less free kicks whenever they play us. Surely it is down to their game style (if you claim the above about Richmond) as to how many free kicks they give away each game, but they seem to give fewer away against us.

How is this to be explained??

any coincidence that of the 6 umpires that gave a positive free kick count our way, only ONE was assigned to us again for the whole year?

maybe this also belongs in the AFL coincidence thread?

we also have the stuff for which there are no stats
the not paid free kicks and the Richmond player takes a mark , he hasn't moved sometimes "play on "
the result is often a turn over or a rushed kick backwards and we get trapped in the back half

so bundle that with the free kick differental and its a bad situation

two questions
Why ?
and
How do we stop it or at least lessen it ?

Because we cant keep being the AFL's villian and make a serious tilt at finals

Here we are, at the end of the year, and fans of all clubs (well, except maybe Footscray) are complaining about the umpiring. But what are the facts?

Well, it is certainly clear to me that either every team suddenly turns into a pack of angels who would never ever contemplate transgressing any rule of our great game when they play Richmond, or we are being umpired differently (I will add that I reckon StKilda have some claim to this issue too).

Here's a rundown of the free kicks for and against for all teams for the H&A games in 2021:

That's right, we have the lowest number of frees for and the highest number of frees against. You could argue that frees against is within our control, although I have doubts, but, if that is the case then frees against must be in the control of our opponents - and they magically concede less when they play Richmond.

It is even more stark when you look at the differential for all teams:

View attachment 13157

Most teams, as you would expect, are close to even on the differential, with only a couple of outliers.

I fail to see what Footscray do which puts them almost 2 free kicks ahead of any other team.

As for Richmond, this really is a bit of a joke. Maybe some of our players give away more frees - but haven't we had players in and out of the team all year? We have a 2.4 free kick differential worse than any other team. Can we seriously say that Richmond are that different to everyone else? That is a stretch.

I'm not saying there is conscious bias, I reckon it is more likely unconscious. But it also reeks of a standard of umpiring which is unacceptable at the highest level of our game.

DS
Geez. That's a fairly brutal disparity. Obvious solution would be for the Tiggies to merge with the Woofers and we'll be back in the realms of non descript free kick normalcy in no time.

Seems the chronic penalisers are given multiple Richmond games and the ones who don't hit us hard aren't given another chance.
