Umpires don't recognise the worth of good backmen

For what it is worth, in my opinion there is a distinction between B&F awards and the Brownlow.

Take for example Dunc Kellaway. I think he always polled decently in B&F counts, because the B&F panel knew what his job was, and how well he executed that job. Now, how is an umpire suppossed to recognize and gespecially give votes to a guy that gets minimal possessions, and a couple of free kicks against because of his job?

It's the voting system that is the issue, not the umpires.

As I've said once before, it's the flashy midfielder's medal. Of course there are exceptions, but they're very few and very far between. Lockett way, way back is the last non-midfielder that I can remember. Remember last year, Tredrea was by far and way the most dominant player of the year, in a great (and mostly disliked) team, he stood out, he was that good. How did he go in the Brownlow... shocking.

Fudge

Fudge, Scott Wynd in 92, Goodes in 03 are a couple that come to mind (unless you count Ruckman as midfielders?).

I don’t agree. The best players play in the forward line or in the midfield. There are exceptions, and also the line has blurred a bit with mobs of rotating midfielders/ HB-HF flankers. Chris Johnson would be a defender who could conceivably have won a Brownlow for example. The exceptions I could think of were Wanganeen who won from a BP. Also Grant (didn’t win but got most votes) but I can’t remember if he spent most time at CHF or CHB that year. I’m sure others may be able to think of other exceptions.

Of course good defenders are essential, but Generally, much easier to negate than create, which is why backmen don’t win it.

TrouserSnake!! Im appalled at you!

You sound like JB03 with your dismissal of the 'foundation'
The tough and reliable defend.
The flash and showy play for ribbons.
You'd be suprised at how many times the best defence in the comp are premiers.

LMAO Bubbles, foundation indeed. Backmen - they are either failed forwards/onballers or blokes who just can't play at all! ;D

Be appalled ST90210. I agree you’ve got to have a good backline to win a flag. But a good backman generally, with some important exception I know, is a player who has the discipline and application to follow another player around. If anything I reckon that it reinforced how good forwards are.

I agree with the peroxide comment though Rosy. Woewodin, blond tips and woeful winner, Brad Hardie, rednut. But I’ll argue all day long the best players are not defenders.

[declaration: I was a fast receiver-winger when I played].
