Is it just me, or is the number of uncontested marks on the rise. Watching the Western Derby yesterday, noticed there were almost 300 uncontested marks, and that was just to 3\4 time. All the games I watched over the weekend, including our game live at the Dome, could not help noticing how many players are left on their own today. No contest, so uncontested marks, usually of a short distance.

For me anyway, this takes some of the excitement from the contest.

Hear hear. So missing the lack of contests in the air.

I find it ironic that I reckon 2005 was the death of contested marks in AFL but the defining moment of the season was one such stat - Leo Barry's on GF day.

The 1st half on Sat was just an example of how ugly the game is without some man-on-man contests.

try watching old fox footy replays of matches form the 70's to mid 90's and you'll see what we the rule makers - bloody KB - and the coaches - have done to the game.

It is now almost a draggable offence if you kick to a contest.

Forgot to add, that handballs, as a consequence, seem to be more and more prevalent, outscoring kicks I think. it seems that way anyhow.

Certainly been a trend in the 'uncontested marks' category, and probably that's the way the games heading.

I'll be concerned what's happening in my backyard and be worried about the number of tackles we laid on the Dawks Vs the number they laid on us. ( I know I've got those numbers somewhere, I'll post them when I find them).

.......................or shouldn't we worry about it because it was a pre-season match.

I'd expect us to be fairly low GPB, we were one of the "worst" in tackles last season from memory, and without seeming to have a lot of physical youngsters in the team, I'd think that it would be an area that would be consistent with last year.

Another reason we had so few could be that Petts wasn't playing :cutelaugh

You can't tackle if you are nowhere near them. Not just us but seems to be all teams. Too many loose players on their own by a country mile. Why is it so??

100% correct Ian. The trouble is, how can you tackle them when you are within a bull's roar of them??

And you weren't allowed to infringe unless you were trying to mark (versus trying to spoil) hence the great backmen took a lot of marks and the good forwards kicked a lot of goals and there were a lot of marking contests. Bring it back I say.
