An interesting thread on Saintsational - a list of the Under 21's that played senior AFL this past weekend"

11 Richmond.
9 Carlton
9 Port Adelaide
8 Collingwood
8 Brisbane Lions
6 Western Bulldogs
6 Hawthorn (don't they consider themselves a young team?)
5 Essendon
5 Melbourne (how about all that talk from the Ox about them having a "baby team"
4 Geelong
4 Adelaide
3 Kangaroos
2 West Coast
1 Sydney
1 Fremantle

A very interesting read when you check the teams in the top 8 compared with the bottom half of the ladder. And the teams that have played finals over the past 4/5 years are rather short on with young players.

I hope I haven't done anything wrong in taking notes from another forum.

Freo are screwed and will need to draft very well, and hope who they have drafted previously all come good, to avoid going backwards (even more)

Adelaide are gonna struggle soon too IMO

add to this that lions, pies & port may have 8 under 21s but their key positions are filled by big bodied players

Does anyone know if there are stats kept as to the average age of a team per game?

I know there is an average list age done at start of each season, but I'd be interested to know how the toothpick Tiges stack up week in week out in age against experienced teams like the Cats, Crows etc. I would think we would have been on average about 4 years younger than the Catters on the weekend.

11 under 21 and i mature age rookie no wonder were getting thumped. It's still better than getting thumped with a mature list. I think next year with the Retirement of gaspar and a few other delistings will probably have the youngest list so it is good to get games into the kids now

Yep, we wanted the "kids" to be played. When we do & we get creamed because of the "skinny& inexperience" factors, some people on this site still squeal. Just can't please everybody i suppose ???

I am all for the young ones playing, if we can stick with the majority of them and get them to bulk up a bit all the better.

That's interesting thanks checkers.  The stats are fairly similar than games played.  It helps for kids to have support but I think too much emphasis is placed on number of kids.  It's more about quality and development imo.  I heard on the radio Carlton had their youngest team for something like 37 years last weekend.  (Edit...I'm not sure if the table below is team averages or averages of the players that game but think it's the latter)

Does anyone think the age of our kids is a reason/excuse to be headed for our worst season ever?  Looking at who we've pruned over the past few years I think the list is in better shape than it's been for yonks, especially when a lot of those who've got the shop weren't getting a senior game anyway.  There has to be more to our poor performance than the age card the club keeps playing.

No way.

Most of our senior group of players are the root cause, and being too Richo conscious up forward, and not implementing another game plan when the 'kick it to Richo' game plan doesn't work.

Not an excuse for our worst season ever. Whatever people thought of Chaffey, Stafford and Gaspar at the end of their careers, replace them with King, Riewoldt and McGuane and you're going to suffer, at least short-term.
