Just read on www.afl.com.au that Arthur Edwards has died.

He played in Footscray's 1954 premiership team and was the father of Allan who played for Richmond in the late 70s (and who is the father of Carlton's Jake).

It got me to thinking ... I used to love watching Allan Edwards as a kid and thought he was a great player, and was wondering why he left. Come on Phantom, you're the expert on that era. He first went to Collingwood but if I remember right it was a few years before the player-pinching war between us and the Pies that broke out in the mid-80s.

If I may.  Butch Edwards left the Tigers mid way through 1979.  I well remember the article in the The Sun where in the photo he's behind some jail bars and the gist of the story was that he wasn't getting a go from Jewell as a CHF which is where he wanted to play.  I suppose he was behind a pretty fair CHF in Clokey.  He went to Collingwood for 2 Considine brothers (Craig and Ross) and Terry Domburg (all from memory, I hope I'm right).  I think he'd already "done" his knee once at this stage.  He moved on to Collingwood where he played some good games and finished up at Footscray in the mid 80s.  He never reached his full potential mainly due to injury.  I suppose the irony is that Cloke followed him to the Pies.  The 3 players we got where very ordinary and I never fully understood why we bothered with 3 no namers.  I suppose it was because we had no leverage as the system was different then.

Arthur was a great player and a great man. To bad we didnt get Allan stright of, would have got his son who is now at Carlton under the f/s deal.

Arthur is also the grandfather of Shane O'Bree.

RIP Arth

Yep, not too hard.

In Edwards first season, 1975, he was a sensation at FF. 6.3, big body, big leap, highly mobile, and a big long kick, he was going to be the new Royce Hart.

At 18, that same year:
Elimination Final - 3 goals of 11.
1st Semi - goalless
Preliminary - 4 goals of 8.
Everything looked great for Edwards' future.

In 1976, Edwards wrecked his knee.
He did recover in 1977 but played more as a tall hff.
During the 1977 finals:
Elimination - 2 goals
1st semi - goalless

I think in 1978, Edwards wrecked his knee again. The club traded him in 1979.
He came back to play in the 1979 GF, for Collingwood, then wrecked his knee again just before the 1980 finals series. He didn't play in either of the 1980 or 81 Pie GF sides.
At the end of 1983, the Pies traded him to the Scraggers. He played the 1984 season with them.
Overall, Alan Edwards' record was:
Richmond, 1975-79, 66 games, 84 goals
Pies, 1979-83, 35 games, 45 goals
Scrays, 1984, 12 games, 17 goals.
