Just some concluding remarks on 2 players.

Beau Dowler
A very good mark when he plays in front, but he has an enormous flaw in his game, and it probably comes from the fact that he's had such a marking advantage over his opponents at junior level. He struggles to get a kick if he doesn't take a mark. His groundplay as a junior has not been developed so I dont think he knows how to get a kick if he doesn't take a mark. The danger. When he plays senior footy and he is opposed by players that can negate his marking prowess, then he might struggle to succeed for the first time in his life. He should have learnt groundplay as a junior.

Ben Johnson
Wondered why I'd never seen him before, he's that good, then it struck me. Meesen so completely dominated the Falcons rucking last season that I didn't notice him. Meesen's gone, Johnson gets his chance. Beautifully skilled player both in the air and at ground level. Dominated round 1 game. Dominated round 2 game but only took 3 marks in blustery conditions. A real Jeff White type player. A ruckrover at a ruckman's height.

Prior seems a big lump of a lad. Is he KPP and is this his first year at this level? Its early but his gaol to behind ratio is just over 50% which is a concern.

Adam played last year.
He is a big lump of a kid, but does get kicks, takes marks and kicks goals.

He was judged to be too slow.

I've noticed he's popped up again this year.
The fact is, he can find the ball, and does something with it.
He reminds me of what Cameron Ling looked like back in 1997/98.

His goal/behind ratio was affected by the 2-5 he kicked in round 1. In round 2 he was back on track and kicked 6-2. Judging from last year, he's generally a good kick for goal, but has the odd bad day.

Usually he plays out at CHF, not FF, he has proven himself to be a multi-dimensional player.

All we need to do is put him on the same diet Fiora was on at Tigerland and he'll shed 5-10 kilos easy.

5 kg ok but I like players with a bit of meat on their bones. 90 kg of muscle who can get the ball can cause a lot of damage across the half forwrd line. IMO we have enough 193-196 cm bean pole "project" players. We need to start looking for big bodied boys who can get and use the ball.

Prior, Johnson, Hocking, Heyne, Murray, Weekley ...are the type (size) of players we should be looking at.

Yeh maybe,

I think it's more to do with our lack of 22-24yo players in general, and 25-27yo rovers.

And a junior ruckman.
We got plenty of other 18-21yos.

Yes I agree that transition mamnagement is vital but I think we should be addressing this over the next 5 years and we shouldn't be looking to solve the problems through trades to fill gaps. Traditionally we do not do well from such trades. Even our recent coups of getting Brown & Johnson, while both good players, are questionable looking to the future. Would we have been better off with Wells & Bradley? Good arguements both ways I think.

You may be able to address some short term gaps through the PSD but the Nat Draft should be reserved for the Kids and our selections, particularly any in the first 20, must be held on to unless a Judd or Brown comes along.

Yep, agree.

It's always a balancing act.

We seem to be making progress now, but we have Rodan, Foley, Hartigan, Roach, Raines, Gilmour, Tambling, Meyer, Jackson, Deledio, Polo, Moore, Shulz, Archibald, McGuane, Limbach & Pattison all yet to establish themselves in the firsts.

I guess the idea would be to maximise our draft picks, but not to close our minds to a very good opportunity.

I suppose it is fill the gaps where we can, but to work on the long term development of future champions.

Now that we have solved that issue, I'll see what I can do about membership numbers.

Not sure whether these four should be included in the "yet to establish themselves in the firsts" category.

TAC Cup: Rout won't distract rampant Ranges
11 April 2005 Herald Sun
Rebecca Williams

THE win couldn't have been more comprehensive, but Eastern Ranges coach John Lamont was reading little into his team's thrashing of the NSW/ACT Rams yesterday.

The Ranges ensured the Rams' trip home would be a miserable one after their 121-point demolition at Box Hill City Oval.

But with a grand final rematch against the Calder Cannons, and matches against the unbeaten Gippsland and Geelong in the following weeks, Lamont said his side could not afford to get carried away by the ease of its win.

"It was a comprehensive victory, but it was against a non-TAC Cup team," Lamont said last night.

"NSW came up a bit short so we're not getting ahead of ourselves, we realise there's harder games just around the corner.

"The next three games will tell us how good we are."

Midfielders Adam Wilson, David Marcius and Tom Pollett were among the best for the Ranges, who buried the Rams with a 10-goal opening term.

Key forward Bradley Kelleher kicked five goals, with Jack Besley and Dominic Di Mascio each contributing four.

Lamont said the Ranges had put last year's heavy grand final loss to the Cannons behind them.

"We haven't looked at the grand final at all," Lamont said.

"I know we're playing the Cannons next Sunday, but we haven't even spoken about it because it's a whole new crew, really."

Calder yesterday registered its first win of the season, a 20.17 (137) to 9.9 (63) victory over the Western Jets at Coburg City Oval.

Shane Neaves was best on ground, with Fortunato Caruso kicking five goals for the Cannons.

An eight-goal haul and best-on-ground performance from Jay Neagle steered Gippsland Power to a 79-point win over the North Ballarat Rebels at Northern Oval yesterday.

In Saturday's games, Dandenong Stingrays continued their impressive start to the season with a 53-point win over the Sandringham Dragons at Warrawee Park.

Murray Bushrangers also remain unbeaten after an 18-point victory over the winless Northern Knights at Princess Park in Shepparton.

A five-goal haul from Hayden Graham helped steer Geelong to a 38-point win over the Oakleigh Chargers at Warrawee Park, maintaining the Falcons' unbeaten start to the year.

Tassie Mariners, playing one of two invitational games in the TAC Cup this season, defeated the Bendigo Pioneers by 28 points at North Hobart.

Todd Grima was a stand-out for the Mariners, kicking seven goals.

Once again, good to see my mate Tomi Johnston up there in the best for Sandy. Still very slight in figure, but can impose himself on a game and quite simply, his skills are amazing. I would think Carlton would be CRAZY not to pick him up on the name alone!

Whree do the Mariners play for the rest of the season?  TFL?

I'm not exactly sure.
I know that Tassie footy is still broken up between the NTFL & STFL. Richo would be the one to ask. You should have asked me this question yesterday, JnBD, then I could have asked Richo last night.
No he's been out of junior Tassie footy too long.
"Happy" Gilmour is the one to ask.
