the afl have to change the rules regarding the priority pick as it is destroying the competition for the teams outside the eight and have no chance if being in the finals. i find myself hoping we don't win more than two matches and that is ruining the whole concept of barracking for the tigers. the way the system is structured richmond would be foolish to win anymore than two more as we would not get that extra pick that would gain us that extra quality player. ( no club would deny that richmond needs this extra help )
a different system might help eg. a panel of well respected ex players could meet in september and reccomend to the afl on which teams need priority picks and which sort of priority pick is needed
the criteria on which this is based would be set out for all to see.
possible criteria
first criteria and most important
not having played finals football for four years
if a team has not played finals for four years and has won less than 10 games in the previous two years then they receive a priority pick at the start of the first round if they have won less than 12 games in the previous two years then they receive a priority pick at the end of round one
once having received a priority pick then you are unable to gain one the following year.
teams deemed to have cheated on the salary cap will have deemed to have played in finals in the year following their penalty
thus possibly extending out to 5 years before they qualify for a priority pick
the panel would have the ability to grant extra picks in extra special circumstances or remove them if they feel a team had only performed poorly to gain the picks or had a bad year with injury.
