Wallace was on SEN this morning. Forgive the late post, I didn’t have time to warn anyone as I caught it by accident in the car and usually such is well caught / posted on here so on seeing it hasn’t been mentioned I thought I’d post up key notes from what he said.
At first I didn’t think it was worth mentioning as was just the usual coach speak but a few interesting tidbits on Cotchin and Cogs.
- Not crushed or deflated to know out of the finals now, as you can’t stress abut what is out of your control now
- When asked about how he rated our season he pointed out most experts has us to finish bottom 3, and it is such a game of “centimeters”. We had close losses and a draw and (wait for it, here is the classic) take the Stkilda game, if we won that we could have been playing for a Top 4 spot this weekend.
- When asked about must be happy with Cotchin’s form after no pre-season he was very quick to put brakes on saying he still has a lot to learn, he was only 17 when he came to the club and will be 19 next year. But yes his poise, composure and kicking skills are classy. For some reason Wallace brought up the “he could have been running around in a WCE or Blues jumper”. His glad to have him. He then went of on a tangent for quite some time about how awkward it was going into that game last year knowing if we won “we lost” (Cotchin) and if we didn’t win “we lost”. Was a no win / awkward situation. The Morning Crew were subtly trying to get him to admit he tanked, even saying after the loss he must have been happy to know he was going to get Cotchin and Wallace replied “I was just glad the whole experience was over, was a no win situation”. We’ve heard the speech before and I’m not sure why he went into it as he got a bit caught up in it.
- When asked if there would be any significant additions at Punt Rd he did the “your always looking at what it takes to improve but I wouldn’t imagine there will be much no, we might get another development guy in or a new assistant coach”
- When asked about how Cogs is going he said he has played about half a dozen games now for Coburg, you have to keep in mind most guys play 4 or 5 games just in the preseason, so he has effectively just done a preseason. He will play finals then we will sit down with him at the end of the year and see what he wants to do and how he feels about next year (I am pretty sure Wallace said “hopefully he wants to go on” but can’t quite recall if that was my impression or insinuated by the morning crew or my interpretation.
- When asked if this will be the real deal, this 9th, as in can it be the bedrock to build something on. He sounded confident. His main point being 11 of the 22 guys out there on the weekend had less than 50 games, only Melbourne had that amount. One of the crew agreed it looked more substantial/”there was light this time around” so they got off that topic.
That’s about as much as I remember; it was pretty close to 90/95% of it. There was something early that I can’t quite recall but remember getting the distinct impression he was talking to members/supporters but it wasn’t any revelation or point of note. I think it was more don’t despair we are on the right track sort of thing.
The morning crew were reading into his words after he went off, saying “That could be big news about Coglan, the fact they are going to sit down with him and see if he wants to go on” Implying without saying it maybe Coglan is thinking of giving it up.
I read it more as ‘assess where his body is” though I do recall a interview with Coglan after his first “comeback” game where he spoke about the game being so much faster now and I personally thought he sounded a bit doubtful/concerned he couldn’t keep up. He was very shocked/surprised at how much faster the game has become in the last 2 years.
So maybe Cogs is struggling mentally, I don’t know. They would be normal demons too when you have been out as long as he has, so hard to read into it either way.
