Ok one year down and it looks like we have a topline coach.  Smart on game day, fires up the players, ruthless (not the player's mate), good with the media and seemingly able to attract players and coaching staff on his known ability alone - they want to work with him.  In other words a huge plus.

We have secured his services to the club for five years, I am not sure how old TW is, but is there the chance that we would see him settle down at Punt Road for longer than the five?  Could we see a mini Sheedy-like dynasty finally at the Richmond Football club?  Will the clubs history of eating their coaches finally become a memory?

Will he make it to the end of a second five year contract and would we want him for that long?  Your thoughts?

Way to early to be judging the performance of someone 1 year into a 5 year deal. Let's see how the Tiges are placed at the end of his term in charge.

(For the record I have faith in him)

I think that TW has actually kept his powder fairly dry this year, not really doing much other than giving the older players their head and watching what happens. I think he has tried to sit back and learn about his team this year.

Look out for more tactical games like yesterday's next year as he starts to put his long term team together.

I was thinking about this the other day Brett.  2005 Terry seems very mellowed compared to Year Of The Dogs Terry.  I wonder if the intense and ruthless persona was exagerated for the movie.

The comment in that he'd fair dinkum spew if anyone told them they'd done well for a narrow loss seems a stark contrast to the attitude this year that close enough was a good effort.  Then again by all accounts what is said to the players after a game is very different to what we read in the media.

Did the Dogs have a better list that year and as thus were expected to do better thaan what we should have expected from our Tiges this year?

I'm a bit disappointed that same as last year and the year before it no players were really dropped for poor form. I thought Terry might have been a bit more reactive.  Maybe a lack of depth contributed to that but I wonder if a few more senior players had a run at Coburg might have taken the challenge to turn their career around like Joel did.

Maybe he did extend the original 6-8 weeks mentioned that players had to prove themselves.  If that's the case the honeymoon is well and truly over now and next season should be quite different.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyy too early to think of contract extensions.  I don't think it should be a consideration until Terry's final year. Danny started out like a house on fire but look where premature contract extensions got us there.

I do think Terry will be far more successful over the long haul but there's a lot of water to flow under the bridge yet.  Despite the word that we'll probably go backwards next season I expect us to improve.

I saw Terry say exactly that earlier in the year. He also said that with this list, he was in more of a teaching phase than he was at Footscray. His expectations for our list were lower basically.

Not too many Coburg players put their hand up.

Rosy I tend to agree with TW being more successful in the long run. I was also one of the people who stated we would go backwards next year, but only from the perspective of ladder position & maybe not as many wins as this season. The area I think the Tigers will improve in is their competiveness & to fight the games out to the end, where we have sadly lacked for most of the past 25 years. It would be good to see a fighting team with a good percentage instead of being a team just making up the numbers.

Wallace has given what we have desired since Northey. A team that fights, a team that plays exciting football.
Building not only a team but a club as sheedy did in 1981
give him 10 years, we will be successfull!

I had a fairly knowledgeable mate who used to say that under Northey the Richmond side didn't play with skill but with emotion. Desparation is a good thing but emotion can't be the principal coin week in and week out - you get flat and when it comes to finals everyone has it and then where are you.

TW I like because it is tactics/adherence to game plan (eg vs Geelong), skill (Royal) and commitment that is required. Now all we need is more talent. ;D

That's true and I remember McAvaney saying that every time he commentated a Richmond game. It felt so patronising.

I think TW has matured as a coach a little since the Year of the Dogs days and he's also more media savvy and knows when to show emotion and when to keep it under his hat. To get the team playing with intensity and get them to bond and play for each other was the first step, if the reports about him changing the game plan 30 mins before the Geelong game are true, then his tactical nouse is also coming to the fore.

and to be able to adhere to the gameplan with such short notice is really quite remarkable for Richmond players!! ;D

(Although many years of dud coaches wouldn't have helped).

I reckon Terry was always gonna sit back and watch a bit more in 2005. He has 5 years and he knows it!!!
The elder players werent dropped because as he said they were going to be given every opportunity to show that they wanted to stick around for the Richmond resurgence!
However as those players move and Terry takes shape of the list and puts his mark on it, thats when we'll see his plans unfold. Why would he give so much away in his first year when he doesnt feel he has HIS players or the players he thinks can carry out his gameplan!

Its an interesting question. I am happy with TW's performance so far. Considering we don't yet have the mature players to take us to the finals, he delivered on his promise to make the team more competitive. Last year we went to the games hoping not to be thumped, this year we had hope of winning the game. That in itself is a plus.

We need to wait and see if we he can mature the players into a finals contention team. One or two more years will answer that question. If so I think we will have a long term coach at last.

Terry has done very well this year. Only dug into his bag of tricks a couple of times this year, and was more interested in developing the game plan, rather than winning. I was happy with our 'thumpings' against Geelong, St kilda and Melbourne because TW made it a shoot out even though we were outgunned. But by having an attacking mind set we were able in a number of games to kick a lot of goals in a hurry - i.e Carlton, Port, Collingwood, Hawthorn. Need to teach the players first and also know what they are capable of. Thought his match ups against the bulldogs and tagging the half backs was great. However he is still primarily concerened with development. I thought we might have won on Sunday with Foley having more game time and wit Schulz going up forward but Foley and Campbell were basically sharing the same role (expect Foley to play anmore significant role next year) and Wallace is also trying to make a point with Jay. It was clear that Schulz could have played much earlier in the season, but it appears he had to do it Wallace's way. I think it is working because the level of intensity and run (and composure) in his last two games have generally exceeded what he provided before.

well done TW and tiges.

I'd say that Terry didn't have high expectations for us this year. He's got a good reputation around the league, and I wouldn't think he'd have any pressure from the board room to succeed.

That's the reason why Terry was more "casual" this year than in his Dogs years.

I'm sure that when we're in the later stages of his 5 year plan, we'll see Terry demand more from our players as his and the boards expectations rise.
