PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Patrick Smith was stirring the pot on SEN this morning about the perceived discord between the board and Wallace. He was saying RFC should re-appoint Wallace now to maintain the momentum from 2008. Not doing so was showing a lack of faith by the board. He claimed that 4 years was enough to make a judgement on Wallace, and he should be either sacked or reappointed now.

Most callers agreed with Patrick that Wallace should have his contract extended now.

For me, after some problems with his early tenure Wallace has done enough this year to not be sacked. The development of some of our young players is looking good, and Wallace should be given some credit for that. Millers departure has signalled a change in the way the club is being run, and I’d like to see how Wallace slots into the new system, particularly if his influence can be reduced during the draft. Delaying assessment of his achievement also emphasises that the board is in charge of the situation, not the coach.

I suspect that the media may hate having relatively faceless boards dominating the situation at clubs rather than more targetable coaches, and that’s what’s partly driving the media attack on March and the RFC board.
