PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I had the pleasure of being in the audience at the motivational talk held by Terry Wallace at Space Healthclub last Tuesday evening.  I have to say that Terry is ten times smarter than Spud and the rest of the coaches we have had.  A great philosopher who will take this club to new heights.  Here is my summation of the night.

His early career
• Had 3 knock backs at Fitzroy Under 19s but never gave up on his dream of playing football;
• A Hawthorn official saw him play and invited him to the Hawks;
• Terry was playing most games with the senior list and finals in his first full season

Hawthorn success in the 80s
• The players made a pact to give up alcohol until they make the finals;
• A few senior players organized a non compulsory morning run at the beach.  Soon, every player would turn up to these sessions.  Their bond grew from these simple sacrifices

Richmond last year
• Players had legs like sailors;
• Training regime was endurance based.  Players wouldn’t train for more than 20 minutes without having a rest.  He was bemused by this philosophy.  Players would start games off well then fade off.
• Brought in longer sessions with minimal rest just like game like situations.  A lot of players were injured during preseason but they will be better for come December 2005.

Recruiting specifics
• 181-193 cm tall;
• speedy of the mark, endurance, skilled.  They have to be Olympic styled athletes;

AFL Game
• The contests have reduced
• More like Gaelic footy 5 years ago

David Rodan
• First player in the gym each morning and with a big smile even though he has a long term injury;
• Other players get 3 week leg injuries and walk around the club moaning.

Players Reports
• Had to complete 40 player reports before the team left for Cairns last week

Tiger draw for 2006
• One word, “Shocking”

Summation of our recruits
• Deledio & Bling: Bling came across from a warm climate, leaving behind his family and friends.  Came across with girlfriend who is pregnant.  Deledio’s parents come over each weekend, is used to Melbourne weather.  Said that indigenous players mature when they are 20-21.
• Meyer: Lots of skill but still a baby.  An introverted person.
• Pattison: Will be a 200+ player at CHF

Technology:
• Motorolla mobiles will introduce live feeds on Terry’s pre and post game summations
• More $$$ to the club

Umpires
• His time at the Bulldogs and this year at the Tigers, both teams are in the top 2 or 3 of free kicks for;
• His philosophy is to treat the umpires with respect and they will treat your team favourably
