I've been enjoying reading the new Bartlett book on the Tigers and it strikes me that the players of old weren't angels like some of you suggest players should be. Clearly a Johnson, a Kerr and a Cousins have had full and rich lives outside football but they can still play on the field and that's what counts.

I also agree with the idea that has been suggested on PRE by a number of posters that the problem (apart from coaching) lies with the socialist nature of minimum football payments (is that the term?) where players are guaranteed a high income regardless of how they perform.

I agree also that those who came up the hard way through the rookies can be more desperate and determined.

True Rinaldo.

It may be hard to do with the salary cap in place, but largely incentive based contracts would see a monumental lift in performance ILO.

Matthews tried to implement it at Brisbane a couple of years ago, not sure if its still there.

Imagaine the pre-season & efforts guys would make if the majority of there pay rested on the seasons B & F finish.....

what problems what is everyone going on about nothings changed has it so everything is normal. sheesh for a moment i thought we had some decent footballers turn up.
