We are not one of the "big 4" teams anymore

we are in the bottom half of the membership table. the other so called "big 3" in victoria all have over 40,000 members each. yes we've been down or a long time, but essendon and carlton have been down for a few years themselves, but they both have 10,000+ more members than us.

the $64 million question is: would we have 40,000 members if we had made the finals the past 2-3 years? my gut feeling says no. we havent had any sustained success for 26 years... thats a whole generation. a lot of kids choose their footy team by whom is succesful at the time. how many kids over the past 26 years have chosen us for these reasons?

but it's not just memberships, it's crowd numbers as well. maybe someone can produce the 2008 average attendance figures, but 75,000 to the 100 year celebration game was a disgrace and we could only manage 56,000 today.
U admonished me a few days ago 4 having the audacity to wonder why North have more members than us then u bring this up. having said that, u raise an interesting topic.

Every time the Tigers play I wear my Tiger's T-Shirt and Cap around Canberra - the number of people who say to me as they walk passed "Go Tigers" or " Go Tiges" or "Carn the Tigers" is phenomenal!

Yes there are plenty of Bombers, Magpies and Blues supporters up here too - the most supporter base here is probably the Swans.

But we have our fair share - and - I wish our club would tap into this base by providing a better incentive to be an RFC member than the current Interstate Membership package offers. For I am sure that over three-quarters of the people who wish the Tigers luck as they pass me by are not members - if there was some way to get just $50 per season out of them - supplying them with a cap plus membership to an RFC web site for Interstate and International members only - that featured in depth interviews and what appeared to be in-side information - plus say a prize flashed on the FTA or Foxtel TV screen during half time or three-quarter time for an Interstate RFC membership number if he/she rings an 1800 phone number within the next 10 minutes.

There is such a huge pot of cash outside the Melbourne metropolitan area awaiting the Tigers - if only they would think about how to tap into it.

Tigers in the Big 4 - I don't know (and in truth don't care) -

Tigers in the Top 4 - now thats another thought altogether -

Tiger premiership - now thats what I crave..........

we'd have equal figures too but we're not gifted that kind of unbalanced primetime.

in '72 when we were flying we were breaking attendance records like they were going out of fashion including the first club to break the magic million and that was in the days of suburban vfl footy when all games were played against one another on a saturday arvo!!!

i have no doubt that when this club gets back on its feet again we will continue to break attendance records, membership records and game records you name it.

best of all, the biggest record will be the drought breaking premiership party!

Amen & Amen.

GO TIGES!!!

Richond are definitely a Top 4 club.

It's not the fact that we have not won a premiership since 80 that is the issue. It is the fact that we have not played in two finals series in a row since 74-75.

If we were to finish even 8th next year and say 6th in 2010, this town would be Tiger town in terms of supporters. God help us if we even played in 3 successive series. :o

right on the money TMW, it would be mayhem...

I think we are still 1 of the big 4 but IMO yesterdays crowd was very disappointing.

The weather wasn't that bad and it was quiet sunny before midday so IMO the weather was not a factor.
2 of the big 4 clubs battling it out it at the G on a saturday arvo to keep their finals hopes alive, would of thought 65,000 at least.

75,000 for the carlton game after so much promotion was also very disappointing.

by reading some of the numbers on this thread, RFC are definately a sleeping giant.

If we can get some success in the next 2 - 3 years, we could return to be a real power like we used to be, which given the circumstances of the last 25 year or so, would be quite amazing really.......

Looking at these numbers, Richmond are CLEARLY still one of the BIG 4 clubs, and given our lack of success over the last 25 years, it is quite amazing, doesnt matter how you look at this table, home games away games or total attendances RFC are a sleeping giant with a lot of people going to watch Richmond but many not buying full memberships due to lack of success.

Other teams will be quite nervous/scared/anxious if RFC can improve on field success as they will reap many many extra $$$ from increased memberships and casual gate takings......... GO TIGERS!

IMO we are often fairing better than the Bombers on this table evn though they have more members than us from the fact that Essendon play home games at Telstra Dome and we play at the MCG, big mistake by them I think.

What ? There was only one game against the gate, and that was in a small town an hours drive away with a 28,000 seat capacity.

Those excuses are almost as poor as the crowd itself.

What about Richmond V Essendon against the gate on foxtel. Redders
Every pub and club and loungeroom would've been packed.
The weather was crap and Essendon supporters are too used to their "cosy" Telstra Dome to come to an away game when it's on foxtel.
Can't say I blame "em. The fire was warm and the beer was cold before I left for the "G". ;D

fantastic point raised by grumpy earlier regarding Hawthorns Premiership Window.

They are smack bang in the middle of their prime BUT it does coincide with what looks to be a Geelong Dynasty.
:o ::)

Don't mind a bit of banter but that's plain ludicrous. ;)

Even if Geelong have a four year dynasty, we'll be just entering our "prime", whatever that may be, when it ends.

Disagree mate. We were going to catch up with someone bringing kids, but they pulled-out early in the day because of the weather. As it was apart from a cold wind there was no problem, but they weren't to know that. I reckon a few people with families must have pulled the plug.

I take your point Azza, but if people didn't come to the footy on Saturday because of the weather (considering what was at stake) then they'll never go during July/August.

Having said that, I am from Ballarat and am more acclimatised to a cold wind... & drizzle... & forst... & ice... & coldness in general, come to think of it why do I live here ???

A good indication will be this weekends crowd figure between dons and pies

Not really, cant really compare this game to rich 11th V ess 12th, the pies are just shy of the top 4 and its the bombers home game, there supporters will turn up as they've already paid for that game, the pies will turn up as there right up there on the ladder, so there should be easily 65 to 70K, maybe more if the weathers good...

On sat it was our home game and even though ess had good support alot of there supporters didnt role up...I know heaps of supporters/members who dont go to away games, they just go to home games.

i think you've completely misread my post motown because i meant exactly what your saying.

We can still pull big crowds and our supporters have generally stuck with us. AFL figures prove this.

Whilst dissappointed with 75000 for the centenary game, I noted that just about everyone there was Richmond. The MCC members and AFL members were empty.

To pull the 85000's you need non RFC people to go to the game. Non competing club supporters will generally go to a good game between top 8 sides not 12 v 13 or whatever we were at the time. When we can get into the 8 and be considered the guenuine article we will once again move into the 80+ range with our crowds.

I live in QLD and was able to get down for the game on Saturday. It was my birthday on Sunday and my wife bought me a surprise present - a weekend in Melbourne and tickets to see the Tigers. Best brithday present ever!! I was surprised that only 57,000 people attended the game but it was still great to be there at the G and watch us have a win. I know that if I lived in Melbourne I would have a full membership and go to every game at the G. I wouldn't want to rely on getting tickets from Ticketmaster as you get charged excessively and you dont get very good seats. My wife bought our tickets over the internet clicking "best available" and the seats we got were stuck in a pocket. When we got to the ground I tried to upgrade them and was told by Ticketmaster that the tickets were sold out. It made no sense to me as there were only 57,000 people there. Not sure how they can explain that! By the way it was my wife's very 1st game of AFL footy (she has never really been interested before) and she actually enjoyed the game. She asked a question after the game which was very telling, "why do the Richmond players always take the ball out to the wide parts of the ground - wouldn't it be easier to go straight towards the goal???" mmm, TW maybe you can answer that one?
