We are not one of the "big 4" teams anymore.
we are in the bottom half of the membership table. the other so called "big 3" in victoria all have over 40,000 members each. yes we've been down or a long time, but essendon and carlton have been down for a few years themselves, but they both have 10,000+ more members than us.
the $64 million question is: would we have 40,000 members if we had made the finals the past 2-3 years? my gut feeling says no. we havent had any sustained success for 26 years... thats a whole generation. a lot of kids choose their footy team by whom is succesful at the time. how many kids over the past 26 years have chosen us for these reasons?
but it's not just memberships, it's crowd numbers as well. maybe someone can produce the 2008 average attendance figures, but 75,000 to the 100 year celebration game was a disgrace and we could only manage 56,000 today.
