Dimi and the boys are just maximising every dollar they can possibly get from the game.
Trouble is their system just makes the rich and powerfull clubs even more so and forces the rest of the clubs to shuffle in on their knees begging bowl in hand, forced to lick the corporate boots for any scraps they can get to stay in existence.
If Dimi and his proletariate colleagues were to actually equally share the peak game times and roster the matches so everyone got an equitable draw, as they do with the draft system. Then you may find that many more clubs could survive without handouts and there would not be much of a dip in viewers or media dollars / exposure as the competition would be not only more genuine but a hell of a lot closer.
Can't ever see this happening, to much control and power to be conceded back to the clubs.

By keeping some clubs on hand-outs the AFL has more leverage to institute it's policies. Look how they're pressuring North.
We don't fit the model because we survive in terms of membership in spite of all the crap the AFL throws at us. I wouldn't mind betting we've been in the long-term AFL sights of being shifted interstate just like the roos.
