PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Having witnessed the example set by others, I'm well aware that there's no surer way to end up looking like a goose than to tempt fate by starting a punting thread with an incendiary title. My rare and generally unsuccessful forays into footy betting provide cause for further trepidation. However, against my better judgement, I'm going to press ahead and suggest that, regardless of the best intentions of the coaching staff and players, we cannot win tonight's game.

This week's side is the most youthful to represent Richmond since 1993. No Tiger unit this young has won since 1969, and we all know how good that year's team was.

Only one club (Hawthorn in R2 this year) has fielded a younger team since the infamous Carlton forfeits of late 2007. While we're justifiably keen to put the boots into the Old Enemy, it seems our club is not averse to adopting some of their dubious methods.

I'm making no allowance for how bad the Eagles might be, having not seen much of them this year. But they will need to be genuinely third-rate to withstand the weight of history and lose.

What's more, there is no shortage of media people tipping Richmond, and we are currently clear favourites with Tabcorp ($1.68 v $2.15 for West Coast). No matter the eventual result, these odds are palpably incorrect IMO.

Not that this will come as a shock to many. I'm merely suggesting to those among you who are partial to a wager and have no qualms about betting against the Tigers, that there are plenty of people of the belief that this week's coaching shuffle will work miracles on our form, and have henceforth furnished such a favourable market. These punters deserve no less than to be relieved of their hard-earned, thereby enhancing you enjoyment and appreciation of the club's "development phase".

I shall return on Sunday to accept the plaudits or brickbats, whatever the case may be. :P
