one year on from beck with the club entering the most important time of yr for determining its long term future. we still dont have a full time recruiting manager.make no mistakes this is definately the most important position held by an individual at any footy club and we have a part timer in miller doing it.what with him being on the board head of the footy dept his personal interests and all the other things he does for the club i would think its impossible for him to do a proper job in the one area that determines a clubs future and performance on the field.
personally i think its a disgrace that miller has not found a full time recruiting manager, he should either resign from his other positions in the club and concentrate full time on recruiting or he should forget about his ego and recruit a decent manager.
are we that bereft of funds that we cant fill the most important role in a club or are they that big headed and stupid they think we dont need one.
for me it concerns me that miller has so many roles within the club i would hope it concerns others as well.

I thought we were keen on Woodhouse?[i think thats his name] from West Coast.
Anyone know his status?

There's no doubt Greg wears a lot of hats at the club santa, and I've been concerned about that in the past too, but it seems to me he's getting the job done.

Do you think Greg's doing a poor job or his record is acceptable?  If he's doing the job properly it's probably not up to us to question his time management skills.

He's a very busy man yet he even finds time to reply to all of his e-mails even if a few months late at times.  It seems he also spends a lot of time watching junior games around the country.

I've heard Greg speak about the recruiting manager job twice.  Firstly when he originally announced he was taking the job on.  We didn't have the finances to employ someone else and Greg felt he had the runs on the board to prove he's capable.

The second time was recently when he responded to a question from Anthony Mithen on sport927 saying words to the effect that there's a good reason he's recruiting manager rather than Mitho and that's because he's had years of experience and has a proven track record.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Francis Jackson earmark for our fulltime rm next year

I seem to remember also, that Francis Jackson will come on board!

Better the recruiting manager that we have at the moment, who listens and is open for discussion.

Rather than some others who thought they knew the game backwards and got it hopelessly wrong.

DON'T FORGET MICKY !!!!

I think there is a legal requirement in relation to Greg Beck being retrenched last year. I think it's 6 months before we can fill the role. I may even be a year.

For mine I think there may be a network in place to do the legwork for GM. He will then review and makes the final calls which I have no problem with. One of the innovations is to review the country networks more thoroughly.

GM seems to be astute enough to absorb a lot of information, communicate with others and then make a decision, i.e. he is a proper 'manager'.

He is a vast improvement on our previous set up.

And don't forget Miller ran the Hammerheads!

I wonder whether he puts that on his resume?

The best part of the Hammerheads was on the selection night before the GF.

The majority of viewers voted for Wade Barber to be left out of the side, in favour of some 5'10" no hoper. (Wade had struggled with injuries in the late season/early final.)

Greg Miller laughed and said that no 6'5" mobile CHF was going to be left out of his GF side. He vetoed the viewers choice. Barber, at CHF, was BOG, and the Hammerheads won the premiership.

I am not sure it is a job that should be formalised in one person. It seems like a job for a panel, perhaps cordinated by a full time person. I would like to see a formal process established that went about collecting good information and using it to build a list that doesn't end up with glaring gaps that take years to fill.

I think a panel systems would work:

Firstly because it is impossible to see all the talent in the country on a regular basis.

Secondly, and this is a point of observation on a number of contributors on this site who do watch the younger talent, individually you are all inevitably wrong from time to time but collectively you seem to hone in on good outcomes, if not the best outcomes. This is a process that could be harnessed for the betterment of the club.

That is a very very good post BJ. Agree fully but the problem is money I suppose to have that pannel established.

Isn't that the role of a "Manager" to co-ordinate & organise etc. IMO that is what has been happening recently, as opposed to previous slap dash efforts.
GM is looking at as much young talent as possible, but he is definitely not doing it all on his own.
I'm sure there are quite a few others out talent spotting. A lot of unofficial stuff also happens. Look at what Phantom & others report on. As Phanto says, at least now they look at other info. not like the previous *&^%$ lot.

speaking of recruiting, i watched the under 18 grand final on saturday. that dale thomas looks like a gun. will he be around for pick 8?

To be honest 33 I don't what process the club has in place for recruiting, it still sounds a bit slap dash to me. Perhaps someone out there can put me straight.
