A very good player who WC missed drafting several times and then paid a kings ransom for.
Bakes has family in his home state
Didn't help that the 2 years he was in Geelong he was probably their best midfielder and played the best footy of his life.
Easy to play well when you have the likes of Duckwood, Arseclench n the good Guffrie playing alongside you in the midfield. Kelly is a decent player but Wet Coke bent over n bared it for the privilege.
Probably why they are looking for a new recruitment manager or whatever he’s called
The funnier part is the bloke who said he'd retired from recruiting after 30+ years on the WC gravy train....... has popped up at Essendon in some kind of mentoring, part time recruiting role.
Easy gig. It's always a great career move to replace somebody who was hopeless.

But his family is not in Perth. Still has a 10/12 hour round trip to see his family. The family are farmers and hardly likely to move to Perth
Don't think going home to be with family would be the draw card some think it would be

Bakes is from out near Lake Grace close to where Nat Fyfe's family farm is. The Bairstows (Mark who is a racehorse trainer these days) also have property out there.
Brian Taylor was from Mandurah from memory.
Though he's been in Melbourne since 1982, so that probably doesn't count anymore.
