Welcome Noah Cumberland

Yes, I saw that frustration in Cumberland in the Footscray game. It is a bit of a balancing act I think. He was clearly p!ssed off with himself, and that is a good thing as he is expecting better of himself. It gets called petulance because he shows it. What he needs to learn is to internalise that frustration and shelve it away for later. Yes, expect more of yourself, but also give yourself a break sometimes, Australian Rules at the highest level is a hard game. Plus, don't pause to dwell on mistakes at the time, think about it later with some time for reflection and in the moment just go to the next contest.

These things are more a reflection of lack of experience and stepping up to the highest level. I am confident he will learn how better to deal with his mistakes, accept every player makes mistakes and learn from the mistakes.

Petulance or Pettifer? Pets had a bit of the negative body language about him too.

As with any sport, you learn most from the mistakes you make. The key is to not make the same mistakes repeatedly!

Cumberland like Richo & Jack earlier in their careers, wears his heart on his sleeve a little too much. As you say, learn to internalise but more importantly learn from what went wrong. He disappeared from too many contests after 1/4 time last night probably because he’s dwelling on a mistake he’d made.

One other tip I’d have for him is to continually make the ball his object. Got stuck watching and/or feeling for his defender last night too. He’s a good mark for his size as long as his focus is on the ball.

How many games has he played?

I love that he is hard on himself and shows emotion. It means he cares.
That’s all well and good but that lapse in concentration means you are playing with one less man. This is what I think Hardwick is eluding to.

Yeah sure but he sometimes does it pretty unprofessionally to the point where his head isn't in the game for a time. There was a post a few weeks ago, someone at the ground, who pointed out he was down on the ground punching it after a miss while play went on that he should have been involved in. I was surprised at the the time but I've seen signs of it since. Point is, I love Cumbo but its no shock to me that Dimma is hard on him.

He’s got the natural talent to be one of the best mid size forwards in the game. Just needs to keep going with the hard work plus keep getting to contests and give repeat efforts. Sole focus has to be the ball, forget the defenders trying to push you off balance.

Every contest is a learning opportunity. Embrace it & keep having a crack.

Kick 3 in the 1st then fade out of the game and your a spud who cops a whack from the coach, do absolutely nothing for 3 quarters and then kick 3 in the last your a gun star who won the game. Fine line is AFL and those who speak about it

He didn't cop a whack from the coach. Hardwick praised him highly but said again that Cumberland has things to work on

Medium sized forward usually tend to drift in and out of games. Not ideal but it is what it is.

Not sure who was our last player, or even last player in the afl to kick 25 goals in their first 12 games?

He’s tracking okay to me.

A little bit of context for the Hardwick haters in this thread. Last year Cumberland averaged 1.9 tackles per game across 9 games. This year he’s averaging 4.2 from 4 games so far.

Let’s not completely rule out the idea that maybe, just maybe Hardwick knows what he’s doing here.
Yep, and isn't it great that our forward line is now made up of players who tackle instead of score.

4th lowest points scored in the league and 16th on the ladder.

But let's keep making sure our forward line players' main priority is to tackle.

It might even net us the 2017 premiership.

If Hardwick continues to nag him he will get up and leave.
Not sure why he is doing it.
We were the happy United football club.
It dosent look like it this year

Meanwhile we have players in the side like Dusty n Shai who rarely tackle n somehow can't seem to score either this year. So that'd make them fairly close to useless for the money they earn.

Sometimes it's simply about having some balance to your game and extra strings to your bow that'll help to make you a better all round footballer. Cummerbund as a young beginner is simply having his game capabilities rounded out, by teaching him he has to chase, tackle and stay focused on the next not the previous. Similarly, what Moju needs at the moment as the only aspect of the game he has got is trying to chase down opponents who have the pill really quickly. As a youngster still learning his craft he needs to learn the opposite of Cummerbund, how to get the pill, make decisions and execute them to round out his game.

Agree Cumbo has so much x factor I can see other teams chasing him
Just checked we won the tackle count 51 to 41 Surely that means we get the 4 points
Scoring is so overrated :sarcasm

He does… just wish he wouldn’t use it when having a set shot.
Yes, I really don't like that silly turn half-sideways run up. It's not working for him at all IMO, just throws his alignment out probably, reduces balance.
Of course, if we had anyone to be a skills coach, he might never have got into this weird habit.
