Welcome Noah Cumberland

As long as Martin plays Cumbo is gonna have to do a lot more to play regularly.

Dimma basically said as much last time.

Thing is Martin is not dominating to the point that we should be leaving out a proven goal scorer even if he has been off target this season.

Hugo in .................Oi Vey

Apart from Ryan, most of our kids have looked crap this year so far. And to be honest, there would barely be a handful of players full stop that are playing well.

Almost all seniors have gone backwards, apart from a few. Sheesh, somethings not right, it’s too much a drop off in one preseason
It's true. Bakes probably the only exception.

The way Noah is being treated by the MC it is no wonder he is down on confidence. He is the one spark we have in our forwards who can change the game. He needs experience playing at the top level, not kicking him down. We lost Butler this way so can't afford to lose Noah the same way

Hopefully in the VFL Noah will learn to stay involved in a game as well as get some experience further up the field
Like Van Rooyen needs to play 4 quarters? Oh wait..
Mate the life of a mid small forward means in and out of the game. Just need to maximise opportunities. Who else do we have as a young forward that has shown anywhere near as much as tbis kid?

I certainly agree he should have kept his spot in the 22 - no question. But the disappointing part of the GC game and the latter part of the Melbourne game is he just didn’t present to the ball/get to enough contests. Sagged behind his opponent too much waiting out the back - can’t do that consistently.

Part of learning AFL but silly to drop as VFL certainly doesn’t suit a player of his type. Hope he’s the sub. I’d just be encouraging him to attack the ball/contest.

What does Van Rooyen have to do with what I wrote?

Sounds like some want us to treat him like he's a superstar. On the whole, he hasn't been very good this year. Certainly not some untouchable player yet. Even Shai was getting dropped in 2019.

Reinforces the point a forward can be a valuable player when he has quiet periods in games. Dangerous players remain dangerous even if being well held, or if supply is crap, or things just not going their way.
Especially young players. And 3 goals in the first quarter against a very good team is rare . Van Rooyen did it the opposite way around.

Van Rooyen had 5 possessions in a 90 point win last week, and one goal.

Not dropped - he still in and keeping Ben Brown and Tom McDonald out of the team.

Cumbo gets crap entries in a loss, dropped.
On top of his work last year it’s strange. I get he has stiff to work on, but this is no way to develop confidence. In out in out. Same for Ross and Hugo and Sonsie really

Came on as Sub round 3 against Pies and was apparently the most impactful sub all year got us back in game - not my words.

Then rd. 4 had 21 touches and a goal and 6 tackles

Then had 8 tackles and 2 goals

Then the Anzac Day (closest to a Final you can get say the players) 3 goal first quarter against equal premiership favourites , 3 tackles and 15 pressure acts (Mansell had 7 and Hopper 8)

Then he was part of last week’s debacle.

Nobody saying he is a superstar, but as a talented young forward in a struggling team that can’t score I would suggest he deserved another game this week

You seem to be equating "staying in the game" with possessions. That's not the criticism on Cumberland -- it's that he drops his head and doesn't work hard enough when the opposition has the ball.

Melbourne may have metrics such as the number of times the ball is brought to ground from a marking contest, that Van Rooyen is doing well at, rather than just the number of possessions and goals.

No butter went because he started playing like his *smile* did not stink. Has only had one good year at the saints and that was his first.

what you say is true. But the kid has to do more. He is in the side to kick goals at least 3 a game. doesn't help when marking and then deciding to kick across goal, missing the target (no points for us, but a goal to the Suns). doesn't help pushing his opponent illegally (needs to cut this out of his game), he needs to link up with his teammates, up the ground a bit more. going back I hope it fuels him to do better, capture last year's form.
