Welcome Noah Cumberland

Cumberland is ranked 1st for tackles i50m pg at Richmond apparently.
Going ok for a guy who was asked to work on his defensive side...

He should, he and Jack are only 2 players who have spent the majority of the year I50, Cumberland averages 1.8, Jack averages 1.3. Cumberland has 9 tackles I50 for the year, he has had 7 in 2 games, and 2 in the other 2.5 games he has played.

It is a bit of an irrelevant stat anyway. MRjr averages 1 tackle I50/game. Does anyone really think Cumberland chases as hard as Rioli? Or Jack does?

Judson had 5 possessions, seeing as we are doing possessions
Juddy was sub was he not Merv? Came on late in the 3rd if I recall correctly? Still, take your point. The game is not about possies, its about impact.

Cumbo had the briefest of cameos very early in the game, but was largely invisible for the remainder. Had to go IMO...as did Arthur. Miller and Juddy clearly lucky.

I can understand the view he should be in the side. I like him, but to my eyes his body language is consistently immature, and he can just go completely missing for 10 minutes, completely, like he's daydreaming, its not just about tackle numbers. If the coach thinks he needs to be dropped because he's not meeting standards he's been set, I can see it. The coach is making a call the fans don't like. I can see why the fans don't like it and I can see why the coach is making it.

What we don't see is what Cumberland is being told by the coaches. If he is in and out of the team on the basis of performance and areas identified as needing improvement and this is being worked on then that is the lot of a young player trying to establish himself.

I hope they are clearly saying that we reckon he can be a regular and valuable player in the seniors but there are things to work on and here is the coaching to make you better.

I like Cumberland, and I don't think he will ever be in the game for the whole game every game as mid size forward is just not a position where you can always do that. He needs to fix a few things and I'm sure they are working on this.

That said, I would not drop him the week we have a VFL bye because he needs game time, maybe sometimes at VFL level, but mostly a AFL level would be the best way.

Cumberland has had 19 tackles for the year in 4.5 games

He missed the first 2.5 games..

So he averages around 4.5 tackles a game.

So if he has only had 9 tackles inside 50, he has had 10 outside 50. Suggests a work rate doesn’t it?
And you just said he and Jack have spent the most time inside 50.
Something not adding up there.

Come on Brodders it’s bad enough Dimma stitching him up, don’t you start.!

There was a post highlighting that he was no1 at Richmond for tackles I50, i was just responding.

If you want to suggest the tackle numbers correlate to work rate, he has had 8 tackles "not I50" in 2 games, so 2 tackles "not I50" in the other 2.5, both on Sunday.

He had 2 tackles for the game on Sunday, and didnt get much of the ball.

You threw up the averages, now it doesn’t suit you say ‘oh the last 2 games..’
I am putting some context around the stats

19 tackles in 4.5 games reads ok yeah?
Plus his goals. Stiff to get dropped

If you want to use stats as a measure, the stats suggest sometimes he tackles (tries) sometimes he doesnt.

We made a shitload of mistakes last week, but 2 guys have been dropped. the 2 guys that people have questioned their efforts. i dont think that is coincidence.

(Miller is luck he is tall, at least looks like he can compete at a ball up and Soldo isnt fully fit or he would surely fit that category too.)

Came on as Sub round 3 against Pies and was apparently the most impactful sub all year got us back in game - not my words.

Then rd. 4 had 21 touches and a goal and 6 tackles

Then had 8 tackles and 2 goals

Then the Anzac Day (closest to a Final you can get say the players) 3 goal first quarter against equal premiership favourites , 3 tackles and 15 pressure acts (Mansell had 7 and Hopper 8)

Then he was part of last week’s debacle.

Nobody saying he is a superstar, but as a talented young forward in a struggling team that can’t score I would suggest he deserved another game this week
Good summary. A far better thing for the coaches to have done is keep him in the AFL team and set new goals for this week after reviewing last week's game. Keeping it simple, I'd have just been encouraging him to play in front or to advantage and get to as many contests as possible - e.g. just compete. Things happen for you as a forward when you get to contests and compete. You also create space for others as well.

I assume the coaches would have highlighted what we all probably noticed at the game - dropped his head after missing gettable set-shot goal in Q1, turned it over after marking within range from a similar spot in Q1 and then seemingly dwelling on these mistakes for the rest of the game and not driving himself to find front spot/lead to the ball/get to as many contests as he could have. He's a young AFL player - that's what happens until he fully captures the self-belief required. He has the ability at least (can't say that for all our young players unfortunately). Ridiculous to have dropped a player with his ability. The VFL is a free for all - waste of time for him at that level.

MJ may chase all day but does he kick goals does he get the ball?
surely MJ is better than chasing butts all day
As for Cumbo he’s very harshly judged by Dimma Same rules don’t apply to Mansell

Dimma has shown little belief in him all season starting with not playing him from the first game. Is it any wonder he's doubting himself?
The post game presser last week after he kicked 3 goals was OTT.

Damien has again fallen into the trap again of focusing on the negatives.
He does that with certain players for some reason.

I know what you are saying, and worked for us in 2017 on focusing on what blokes can do, but when a player goes missing for 7 of the last 8 quarters that we play, and his effort levels questioned, surely not a bad thing to send a message and work to improve these fixable weaknesses is it?. If it wasn't a fixable thing like effort then I hear your point, but currently I have no issue with this. Sets standards for the group too, just speculating but he may have thought he was Un droppable and acting and playing like it.
