Serious question which applies to Daniel and George. Can we continue as we have? Jack has been down on form this year and the goal contributions from Daniel and George have also been down - well down. But other than the run and chase which is very difficult to value won't we need more from our small forwards?

If we have to improve in 2021 to win the GF the forward line is the obvious candidate. Have George and Dan reached critical minimum contribution levels when you look at their performance over the full year?
Shedda, Presty, Bash, Nank, Assa all missed large chunks of the season. The whole forward half was down on goal contributions. The Trossman was gawn n replaced by a kid with a handful of games. Yet we still finished third after the home n away season n cantered to another flag.
Since the mess of 2016 our game has not been about individual form or performance, it's been completely about contributing in some way to the overall team output.
We have pretty much less of every stat that mobs like Champion doofus n other experts deem necessary to win games year after year n yet none of them can figure out how to stop us.
We may or may not win next years flag. But we'll be in the hunt again simply because we have 21 players all chip in a contribution on match day n then Dusty takes the hat n goes full party mode whenever he feels like it.

Been thinking about this.

To go to the next level I think we may need to find more goals from our small forwards.

IMO Baker or Short could provide more goals. Stack also. Aarts has shown he knows where the goals are.

But do we sacrifice what makes us an irresistible force if we replace george, rioli and lambert with more goal savvy small fwds?

It's why Butler couldn't get a game

an interesting question
Hard to judge too with the reduced game length

Castagna had an up & down season but was good in the GF aside from a couple of errors (inc the dropped chest mark). He does give 100% though. Rioli is the one for me that needs to improve otherwise his spot is up for grabs. Lost his zip, second guesses in ball use & doesn’t play with the intensity of 2017.

i feel that Cotchin, Edwards, Houli should be playing 2 wks on and 2 wks off next season, allowing their replacements to gain valuable time. Need to balance Aarts and Caddy too. This will allow our older players to play fresh and full of energy. After all they have achieved their greatness and playing 22 games may not be viable with longer quarters.

We have so many good prospects ( kids ) and would love to see more of them next year.
We are system based side so the transition should be seamless you would think.
I don’t want to be losing any kids at the end of the year.
It will be a fine balancing act to do that.
Maybe when we travel interstate ?
You could add Grimes, Astbury, Jack, Nank in that discussion.
Keep the older players fresh and incentives for the younger players..

But could you imagine the outcry by the media..

Richmond showing ‘arrogance’ to the opposition..

I think it’s something you would consider doing depending on how the season is unfolding, team balance, opposition and ladder position.

There's also the issue of resting experienced senior players to give the kids a run n then if the kid hits some form, he either gets dropped for no valid reason n gets pissed off or the senior player gets pissed off 'coz he's been forced to have a rest he might not have wanted n then can't get his spot back in his last year or two because the kids in form.
Very fine line to tread n fraught with team disruption if it isn't extremely well managed.

Obviously George did his job this year , however I thought his form was just, didn’t finish in the top 10 in the B & F which is not great considering so many missed big chunks of the year , bottom line is his an important part of 3 Premierships, like too see him improve offensively in 2021

Taking the emotion out of it all together and looking at clinical list management, George should be considered for trade. He could probably earn more elsewhere (ala Ellis), and would get some interest (mainly thanks to the success of Butler at St Kilda). And if we are going to try give more game time to the next gen of kids, then I see George's role as one that could be used, with minimal downside in overall team performance. Nothing against George, happy for any triple premiership player to stay, but the club should be looking at the possibility in the interests of list management.

I was reading this as satire waiting for the punchline to come, but it never did.

The reduced fatigue in the game meant it was harder to blow up your opponent and burn them off on a fast break back.

Pure theory, I've done no research or have any stats to support, but to my mind our number of goals when we break from a midfield/half back turnover and get past the defenders behind the ball were massively down this year. I think those type of guys will have kicked a lot of those in the past few years when it has been almost a trademark of how we play, but the defenders had enough in the tank to continually get back this season.

This is an excellent point. I think it’s on the money.

The most one-sided Grand Final in AFL history saw us goalless until seconds before the quarter time siren when a small forward kicked one on the run.

Longer games next year will mean opposition defenders and flankers will be tired for longer periods of the game. You’d expect our small forwards will have more opportunities to capitalise on their mistakes.

I guess one way to measure the above might be from goals created by turnover in the final few minutes of each quarter?

It is hard to see on the TV but Castagna and Rioli both looked to be down this year. I know they block space but we need a bit more from them.

It is also hard to judge much on this year with the disruptions, the hub, the shorter quarters.

I hope they do go back to 20 minute quarters next year and not 18, this is Australian Rules Football, we have always had quarters of around 30 minutes with time on. We need to go back to that.

If we go back to a more normal season then lets judge how players are travelling.

One thing I will say about Castagna: when he lined up for that goal in the Grand Final I commented to my partner that, being Castagna, it could go anywhere, but I still reckon he kicks them when we need them - sure enough he put it through. Someone needs to work on his kicking with him but he does seem to get them when we are in need. Similar goal in the last quarter of the 2019 PF, we needed one and he slotted it. 2019 GF, we weren't in need, he sprayed them everywhere.

Can you increase your leg speed the older you get?
Because he had Geelong defenders rush kicks all night.
Especially after half time.
Best defensive forward in the comp by a country mile.
I wouldn't trade Castagna for 2 first rounders.
Without him we are Richmond 2016

Castagna if he can control his marks will be a high damaging player. He has pace, places high pressure, runs for long periods, leap. Needs to control his marks, then his status will further increase. last year in GF, his pace burned the opponents, but only managed 5 points.
