PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Lucky enough to be given a DVD of The History of the Richmond Football Club for Dads' Day, which also included a DVD of the 1980 Grand Final.

Boy oh boy, did we have some stars in those days or what??

Roach as FF, Bartlett kicking 7 goals, Jimmy Jess starring at CHB, Michael Malthouse a rock in defence, Mark Lee killing them in the ruck.

Then there was Wiley roving beautifully, David Cloke kicking 5 goals in a great display, Francis Bourke getting his hands on eveything at FB, Weightman showing a clean pair of heels to all and sundry, Bryan Wood starring on a wing, and not forgetting the magic of Geoff Raines in the centre. Mervyn Keane was another in the backline who did not let a thing pass him. Probably left a couple out, but heh, who cares, we thumped Collingwood by a record margin.

Noticed a few things different from today's footy.

Richmond did not use the interchange until the 17 minute of the last quarter when the then captain, Bruce Monteath came on, and in the dying moments, Darryl Freame got a bit of a run. What else?? Oh yes, tackling was not as intense as today, the umpies bounced the ball very quickly, a penalty was 15 metres not 50, and the boundary umpires also threw the ball in quickly. No arguing with the umpires...I think one was Bill Dellar. More one on one contests, and play on was the order of the day.

Amazing to contemplate that both Cloke Raines and Malthouse all ended up at Collingwood. Bryan Wood went to Essendon.

For those too young to remember back that far, our coach was Tony Jewell.

Ah, the good old days. How the game has changed in 25 years.

Tonight, watching the Swans and Cats, I have to wonder!! This would have to be one of the worst games I have ever seen.
