What a novel idea

And to think some even say if you are tackling you are only chasing--- PRESSURE!
Tackle count versus opponent for season 2009

1st St Kilda
14th Geelong

Sometimes a low count means you are under pressure, sometimes a high count means you are chasing.

I like most stats but particularly like points for and against in grand finals as an indicator of where a team is at.

Richo was funny on telly last night. He said we've had Storm players at the club teaching tackling for 2-3 years but he doubts Robbie Kearns (might be wrong with the name, I don't follow rugby) would tell too many people he was involved, jokingly inferring they haven't had too much success with us. He said they're taught to hold the arms in when tackling because it means the opponent can't dispose of the ball properly and you'll be rewarded with a free.

Waste of time and money having a hulking league player showing Jordan McMahon how to tackle.
Tackling isn't just about technique, it's about attitude.

I've had a few people on here have a go at me in disbelief and off PRE in the "real world" ( :hihi) when I've told them we have had Storm down at our club the last few years not just recently.

Can't say I blame them. :hihi

It's about both. The better the technique and execution the more the opposition pays the price. It seems a bit of Jordy bashing to single him out too. He's certainly not the only one who isn't exactly strong in that area but overall he probably contributes more than he costs us. It would be great if every player could aim to do a certain number of tackles a game. I know it's something Whitey had as a personal goal and he was our leading tackler against the Roos.

Dyer it was discussed on here a few years ago when we first got Storm players to the club. I forget which year it was but a search would probably find it somewhere in the archives.

Edit- Here is a link to an article about Storm players teaching us tackling in 2006

I'd say tackling's about 80% attitude and 20% technique. Maybe higher.

Footballer's are taught the basics from a very early age how to tackle.
They should not need to be taught much by the time they reach AFL level.
If they do it's a worry.

Not suggesting a technique can't be at all improved but having a rugby player teaching technique there for 3 years seems ridiculous to me.
Richo's basically said as much given how little success it's had.

Mindset is the key to a good tackling side and Wallet's statistical history with football teams show's he has never place a high emphasis on that aspect of the game.
Perhaps a touch unfair to single him out but Muffin but he was only used as an example because he is typically why we have been crap in this area for so long. Skinny and defensively unaccountable.

Finally some harder bodies are coming into the side with the right mindset.
I doubt Kearns will need to teach those blokes much at all.

Dunno, maybe the Storm boys can show us how to do a proper chicken wing tackle, or maybe even a grapple tackle.

If it's not banned in the AFL yet, let's use them.

Richo, and the panel, also discussed the rewards of good technique and the reasoning behind it.  I got the opinion they think it's quite important. ;)

80% attitude, maybe more, 20% technique is a way to exaggerated proportion imo.  Players need a good proportion of both.  It's no good tackling heaps but not having any effect and it's no good having the best technique in the game if they don't bother using it.

GEEZUSSS.....if this is true I give up.

This is one of the first things taught to us in the under 10's - 30 YEARS AGO!

I wonder what will happen if we start to shepherd too!

That's where Terry's 5 year plan went wrong.

Years 1 - 3 ......Switch players around in positions constantly until they "click" into a spot

Year 4 - Get us much athletes into the side as you can, don't worry about kicking or footballers. Oh and play Richo on the wing!

Year 5 - Start tackling

He left it too late to insert shepherding, that will prove his downfall. Or maybe we should give him another year so we can fairly judge him....

The single biggest problem with RFC's tackling is that it is predicated on playing a team called Tackle Bags. We beat those mute, stationary bastards every time :hihi

Talking about Tackling, I'd be so pissed off over Jacksons tackle that almost snapped Harveys arm off if I was a North Supporter. I still blame Whelan for his tackle/smother that snapped Nathan Browns leg in two.
