This is mostly just my gut feel
1. Chris Newman
The most interesting thing to me was the way he took a huge step up in the International match. Maybe he's turned a big corner in his confidence to handle an important job. Hate to say it, but under Sheedy's con work he responded magnificently. Same can be said for Lids and his newly displayed nasty streak (ie those tackles into the turf).
3. Brett Deledio
Agree it's a big year and will show more about the coaching staff in the way he is used. I really believe he's going to be up to the Hird level and remember Sheedy talking about extending Hirds career by not playing him at CHF even though that's where he was needed. Love Lids' competetive nature and the way he was the only player to go and change into (bright orange )spikes before the 100 metre sprint at training.
6. Mark Chaffey
I suspect that Chaff may find just the role to suit this year, don't know what it is but just a feeling. Strong, experienced bodies don't go to waste anywhere.
7. Nathan Brown
This is the big injury worry, and I feel that it will be our biggest ongoing problem.
12. Matthew Richardson
Love the big fella but he worries me when he made the comment at training about the poor delivery into the forward line. Even as a joke you don't bag your teammates. Reminds me of the story about treating waiters with respect because they deliver the things you put in your body.
13. Trent Knobel
This guy could be the classic late developer, since he was a lot better than expected after St Kilda dropped him, especially compared to Ackland.
14. Dean Polo
Not really worried about his kicking, but liked his handball and I think a clever tap-on in a Coburg match. To me he could be a very smart on-baller working with a future crew of Cogs, Tucky, Lids, Newman, Bling, Meyer, Rodan and Krakouer.
15. Kayne Pettifer
I feel you're wanting 40-50 goals from a HFF is a big ask, I'd be happy with 30 and more work to set up others. He does seem too focused on his own glory sometimes without thinking about the mates downfield who got him the ball.
16. Patrick Bowden
Agree with a lot of others that if he only earns his place in the 22 he will be great value. Showed a very strong pair of hands overhead at training, calm and confident with his marking.
17. Kane Johnson
Along with Browny, Tucky, Cogs and Lids, I think he needs more care from the coaching staff to best use him without running him into the ground.
18. David Rodan
Could be the tough nuggety onballer we didn't have last year. With the contract talk and possible loss of Brown as a rover, he really needs to step into a key role this year.
19. Dean Limbach
Unfortunately, after the training night all I can think of is "mug lair". Hope I'm over-reacting.
20. Ray Hall
Could be very handy as he is getting better at the CHB role against some of the better opponents. His suspension came at a very poor time.
21. Shane Tuck
As stated above, I worry about burn out in the centre. Could take a strong hand as a goal kicking midfielder.
22. Danny Meyer
I thought this kid would be a senior this year, but he doesn't seem to have put on any weight. A worry for either a midfielder or a defender which would limit his adaptability.
23. Daniel Jackson
Can still remember getting flogged at Telstra by Carlton in 2004, Jacko went into the middle and extracted the ball twice in a row when we were getting nothing from anybody else. Agree he could go on to be a good big bodied midfield option with the right development.
24. Mark Coughlan
The guy is potentially our best player at the moment (ie further developed than Tuck or Deledio and more dangerous/valuable than Bowden or Johnson). I can't believe we can't get the guy right to play at 100%.
25. Jay Schulz
Best of luck, but I just don't see it.
26. Adam Pattison
As above. Question marks over not only his pace, but every thing else including skills, nous, build and desire.
27. Andrew Krakouer
A real problem since I think everyone (even Claw) believes he could be a very valuable player with a different attitude. Who knows how to get him firing? Again a big litmus test for the coaching staff.
30. Richard Tambling
Hasn't really shown why he was touted as a possible first draft pick. Needs a clear run at the job without injuries to find what he can do. The worry is the number of times last year when he got caught, believing he was going to blast past players. Needs to respect and understand that these opponents are not mugs but elite, professional athletes.
31. Chris Hyde
Was good before the head injury last year but what does he actually add in a major way to the side.
32. Greg Tivendale
Needs to quickly find his goal kicking skills. I don't expect him to stop his opponent but he really needs to become a threat or he's not much use at all.
33. Brent Hartigan
Which rock did this guy go under after doing the hammy. For the coach to be saying that we are desparate for a back pocket after this bloke had been so good early, makes me think there is something badly wrong in the relationship. If we recruited White and Humm for the role, whats going on?
34. Cleve Hughes
Loved just one glimpse at training. Players in two groups of about six, attacking goals and looking for options to pass to. He was suddenly in danger of getting caught in possession and threw the ball on his boot as he turned out of trouble. Whoosh, straight through from 45 out. Oh yes I love instinctive forwards, who have a crack at goals under pressure.
35. Matthew White
As stated above, could be in place of Hartigan before long. Really liked the way he looked as if he belonged at training but was really hard at it as well, hungry for a chance.
36. Will Thursfield
A slower development curve filling in for Andrew Kellaway on occasions this year. Now knows he can do the job, just needs to develop physically to get stronger to match it with the stonger forwards.
38. Luke McGuane
Who knows? Needs to impose himself like so many others (eg Schulz, Moore, Limbach, Pattison, Raines, Roach) and demand a spot rather than just drift along.
40. Kelvin Moore
As above. Show me something, anything.
41. Nathan Foley
At least one of Rodan, Krakouer, Hyde or Foley will be on the back burner by years end. Can his desire overcome his defects (ie poor skills, slow and not super strong or smart).
42. Jeremy Humm
Could be an interesting pickup but seems like just another stop gap. Must wait for a spot thru injury while always being at peak form and fitness. Big ask for a guy thats been around as long as him.
43. Cameron Howat
Reminds me of Foley. Gutsy, but with limited speed, ability and physique. Who knows, but look at Greg Williams for God's sake. Does Collins want him just for Coburg and if so, what the hell are we using our list for.
44. Angus Graham
Now this one REALLY impressed me at the training night. Incredibly athletic, flexible, good/excellent skills particularly below his knees. Also happens to run like the wind (and efficiently, a BIG plus for a big guy) and has a good solid build on a VERY tall frame. I just hope we don't screw it up since this kid impressed me more as a prospect than any of our pickups for the last three years (barring Lids of course). Wasn't expecting much after the talk on here pre draft, but very impressive.
As I said at the start, mostly just gut feels and hunches.
