After a few games as caretaker coach, and watching the games, albeit on TV, being away on hols., I am wondering what, if anything has changed in respect of our game plan....and I use the term loosely??

Tell me what other team plays ring a ring a rosy with the ball in the backline with handball?? No team that I can see, why why do the Tigers persist in this type of footy? Invariably it leads to a turnover and then of course a goal to the oppo. Also most teams after a point has been scored against them kick the ball in very quickly to a team mate. What do we do? Wait for ages and then kick to a contest. Not being the best high marking team going around, more often than not we lose the ball either to a mark or spillage.

I thought our new caretaker coach would address these matters, but so far, all I can see is giving some kids a go, but no change to the so called game plan. Am I right or wrong here, seeing I am only watching on the box not at the game for the present??

We seem to be kicking it longer into the fwd line. In the Carlton game while there was still a lot of handball I thought we had more fwd momentum than we have had under Wallace.

a lot has changed

we are playing kids who are learning a role, as opposed to veterans who's days are numbered

we are giving a chance to the kids to make mistakes, but not in the fear they will be replaced by McMahon/Petts

also I think the players are backing themselves more, and we have much less of the chip-chip-chip rubbish along the half back line (unless we are under direct immediate pressure like Carlton did to us)

we will not win many games (if any), but Jade has done more for our kids development in 3 weeks than Wallace did for the entire year (IMO)

Here, here. Agree entirely. For the 2nd time this year I am optimistic going forward (1st time was before round 1). Jade is on the right track, and without knowing anything specifically, he seems to have the players wanting to play for him.

We have talented kids that can play football but under Wallace and his lack of vision we played hacks and duds and persisted in playing guys whose best was past them or in the case of King and McMahon never arrived. The kids will develop quickly and we will prosper if this development continues. Now we just need the panel to make the correct choice. Lets hope guys like Pettifer, Bowden, Brown and McMahon are never seen again in a yellow and black jumper

Expecting Jade to step into a senior coaching role and 'fix' the Tiges problems in a couple of weeks is a tad ambitious and unrealistic dont you think? Even though we lost to the scum last weekend, I'm enjoying seeing our young 'uns out on the field. It gives me some hope for the future.

Of course it takes a huge amount of nous to play kids - anyone would look good to Wallace at Richmond.

In reality, when the pressure is on, players will revert back to what they know best- hence the handball happy sideways movement that Wallace drilled into them. it will take some time to get that out of the system IMO. Im just happy that we are playing some of the kids.

Unfortunately our players have been programmed by Wallace to play in this way. After 5 years they have become robotic and dont know any different. I agree it will take a very long time and introduction of good new kids to re-train our players to play differently. Wallace should be ashamed for what he has done to our team!!

Lets hope so DHN!

What has changed is that the RFC has now embraced the tankathon. This season's second half is shaping up as the most keenly contested series of losses ever seen in the history of the AFL. We should have employed Handbrake Harry White as caretaker coach.

I suggest you take a look at the latest training report :'(

Thanks all for your comments. Nobody, has yet replied re the kicking in to a contest? Other teams seem to be able to pinpoint a team mate with great accuracy. Eg, the way the Mudpies seem to pick out Didak, on his own, miles from anyone, half way down the field. Why can't we do that??

I'm sure there are numerous reasons why we kick to a contest more often that other teams. My thoughts are not that well researched as my young family precludes me from getting to many games but here goes:
1. Our kids are not strong enough to break tackles and take on the game
2. Team mates know this and are not fully committed to backing them to break into space and deliver the ball to them in the clear. They do not take a risk and gut run to open space continually.
3. Some of our team do not make the correct decisions even when team mates are clear and in good position.

Didak "rolls the dice" a bit by his aggressive running - good on him - he could get caught out.

IMO TW instilled a really individual playing style. No blocking, no shepherding. On top of that, we either lack players who are willing to, or they lack the fitness, to continually run off their man to create options. We always seem very stationary at kick ins. We then either kick 15m to a player short, or kick long to a 50/50 contest.

With a bit more team oriented game plan, players would block or shepherd to allow team mates to get free.( like Cousins does) But the players have got to be prepared to run to create options (again like Cousins does) because at the moment they just seem to stand there wait for the ball to come to them. gee our boys could learn a lot from ben ;)
