What is Danny doing right?

Given that much debate has been Anti Frawley, and that many in this forum and elsewhere think the club should stick with him for another year, I would be interested to hear what people think Danny is doing right? PLEASE- negative posters should stick to the other 4 thousand threads. I am interested what people think is heading in the right direction, and how this will work out for us long term.

Obviously easier to answer this question after round 8 hutstar! Far easier to point out negatives when we're playing badly...

But I'll give it a go:

Defensive (back half) structure has be always been good, the stats back that up, even when we're losing. Campbell spending time at half back has been a great move, the development of Chaffey, Kellaway, Newman, Holland to CHB was a very good move, pre-knee injury. Generally I can't be too critical of our defence, especially when all fit and well and playing with some confidence. Kick outs have been good, in fact I think we are right up there for creating scoring shots (for us!) from defensive kick-ins.

Development of Coughlan and recruitment of Johnson has improved our midfield, as has Stafford. When all fit (and that hasn't been very often) the handling of Stafford and Ottens, along with Cogs, Rodan, Johnson etc through the midfield has been OK. Hard to make judgement here as Stafford, Ottens, Campbell, Hall have missed large chunks of football in the past two seasons. They're not at top 6 stage yet but I think the midfield structure is on the right track, we just need some bigger bodies and smarter heads in there, plus some luck with injuries would help.

Off field he's been one coach that's had the guts to drop players for disciplinary reasons (Vardy, Ottens, Daffy, Richo) and set standards for off field behaviour. Sorely overdue and seems to have worked (touch wood!).

When we've been winning, I've been impressed with our much quicker ball movement and direct kicking. The flicking the ball around by hand that frustrated the bejeezuz out of everyone under the Giesh has been largely eradicated, thank goodness.

I'm sure there is more but that's all I can think of off the top.

As I have been one of the more vocal Spud critics once I saw the light, but I will have a go at this.....

Backline for the majority of times has been very good. And with Gas back and hopefully another big backman I think this will continue to be our strong point. When the backline is settled the ball is run out very efficiently.

After that I struggle to find much else Spud has done well. But this is probably the way he played. Get it out of the backline quicksmart and then regroup. He footy brains as a coach appears to do the same thing.

Good points Dean. Especially the discipline side of things.

I would add the following.

He stood firm regarding McGrath not being played in the seniors until warranted - despite the constant cries from fans.

Without getting into a debate regarding whether the decision was right or wrong - he did tell Knights to retire because his time was up. Whether people wish to acknowledge it or not for a coach who has been maligned for not having any "guts" - a tough decision/call.

He was the person who convinced Ottens to re-sign at the end of 1999.

He bought Cameron to the club - one of the few trades we have got right. Which not only bought a player with great skill but a bloke who is a very good leader - so I think we scored twice there.

I think his handling of some the kids 'off-field" has been first rate. It is an area that gets neglected. But look at the interstaters in particular (eg Cogs, Krak) and you'll see what fine people they are. It is a big thing for these kids to come over the other side of the country. I think it is a reflection of the Footy Dept that Cogs re-signed last season before his contract expired. He obviously wants to be here

Dean has covered alot of what I would have said regarding the way we play. I think the move of Campbell to the back half - long term will bear fruit as long as the development of Rodan and in the future Krakouer continues. The addition of Johnson (again another trade we got right) has helped Cogs in his development.

I think the structure in place from our kick-ins is not only solid but great for the re-bounding needed to score goals. The move to Tivva to be our "designated" kicker in this area was a positive move and strategy from the coach.

I think the recrutiment of Staffy -was in hindsight a stroke of genius and the elevation of Staffy to the leadership group by the coach a good call as well.

We have a decent defence..... other than that he has also exposed our our lack of talented players on the list

This is a pretty sad thread for one that should be positive.

It's hard to know what can be attributed to Danny and what was out of his control but either way his ledger seems to come out pretty much in the red.

I agree we've had a good defence. Even in 2001 when people were wrapped with the way we played, I think a lot of games were won mainly due to our backline. Not sure if that's a positive but we're lucky we had them.

Another positive is Danny always speaks nicely of Duncan and recognises his worth to the team, unlike some others here. ;D

Consistency of effort - 9 and 8 losses in a row is pretty consistent I would have thought. What has Frawely done right? - LMAO.

I agree with the backline setup. We have been smaller than most clubs in this area and have performed pretty well. I think this is mainly due to the high workrate of Chaffey, Newman and Zantuck rather than Frawley's coaching ability but it's a positive nonetheless.

I will have more respect for him at the end of the season if he does 2 things.

1 Genuinely cleans out the cupboard of as many duds as he can and
2 Focuses on a youth rebuilding policy for 2004 and this means giving them a fair go earlier in the season.

Danny has good wholesome values and would have tried to instill them in the players.

He has also done well to make me and many others laugh everytime he opens his mouth.

John F - A wholesome lad, sounds like a Danny Boy ballad is on the way. Or have I missed another contribution from the weird Al Yankovic of PRE?

As everyone else has mentioned, our Defence is certainly the area where we have had much of the improvement.
Our Defence used to be terrible once.
I also believe that without a doubt, Danny has turned over our midfield. We now have Coughlan, Johnson & Rohan (developing still). I see our midfield to be our future strength.
Danny made some hard decisions and turned over an aging midfield to have the next generation superstars come thru.
Frawley has given some youngests a fair go.
Frawley also is honest and has the players respect.

Under Geischen our defence was our major weakness. Danny has turned it into a strength and like rosy said it was one of if not the main reason we got so far in 2001. Our defence definitely covered up the cracks in our midfield against all but the top sides of 2001.

Pretty slim pickings after that. Yes it was acknowledged our midfield wasn't good enough hence the recruitment of Johnson and Blumfield last summer but that came a year too late. The decision at the end of 2001 to chase after specialist forwards in Hudson and Houlihan instead of realising the midfield was our weakness was a costly error.

He speaks ro the media in a manner that is 100 per cent outstanding.
he talks about the positives and how good we are going .
After the last game there will be a positive that we have won ONE game in the last 14.
He has recruited brilllantly over his term as coach.
He has Holland being one of the Highest paid players at the club , thanks to his recommendation.
He has repeatedly bought up ROOKIES who have had oustanding seasons.
he has recycled average footballers in to stars at the club, HUDSON, HOUILHAN , KING ETC.
Fair DINKUM, why do RICHMOND SUPPORTERS EXCEPT MEDIOCRACY for ??
Isnt it obvisous he cannot coach !
