Been thinking about how do you ruthlessly run a football club with due dilligence.
Take the lastest Cousins chapter. Strongly reported I know, but technically still unsubstantiated. Latest is the Rehab Centre is refusing to say wether he has checked in or not, though I would imagine this would be stock standard procedure for client's privacy.
IF (and i did say if before Cousins defenders jump down my throat) it is true...(keeping in mind he got his court case adjourned so he could go to rehab)...*shakes head*
What is he going to have to do before some RFC supporters say "Hmmmm this guy has really lost the plot, he's far too big a risk..."
There are some people out there kidding themself that they are ruthless, tough, "old school" supporters as they believe recruiting Cousins "makes a statement", and he is "the best available" or that "we need football players not do-gooders" etc.
Wake up and smell the coffee people! RFC DOES need to toughen up a hell of a lot, we have all known that for years, but recruiting a guy with massive personal demons is not the way to exorcise our demons.
Ruthless, hard at it clubs are recruited young, brought up and moulded together (geelong, brisbane, wce, hawthorn in previous era etc) to be one unit with the "wild men " or "hard men" amongst them doing little more than get suspended a little too much or have some off season adventures on the *smile*. (J. Brown, Mooney, Mclean etc)
So called hard ass suporters must respect John Worsfold as a genuine tough nut, both in his day on the field and now as a coach. When WCE won the last premiership he was one of the ones raving about Cousins, after their final loss this year he reportedly ripped apart Cousins verbally for tearing at the fabric of the club.
That is tough...that is what footbal leadership is about...not how much ink you have on your abs.
For all you who argue and laugh at how "over dramatised" Cousins negative affect would be on a club, I'll say no more. I'd prefer to listen to someone who would know better than anyone in Worsfold.
Fair dinkum, Jack would be sharpening his elbows right now in his coffin...
So my question to you all is...
Being ruthless in my eyes is having a focussed, tunnel vision on turning over the dead part of our list, the positional holes and not putting up with half assed trainers or people who shirk the contest. It's about getting the best off field staff and structure and board to lead the club. It's about gaining a arrogance derived from success not false bravado.
I know personally (as it appears many on here do) of players who have done far less behind the scenes (ego, sex, gambling, addictive subtsances issues) than what Cousins has on a repeated basis and have been quietly moved on/out by their clubs (funnily the instances I know off were some of bigger/more successful clubs...and in some cases they were superstars/big names for those clubs.
It's no about being a "do-gooder", it's not about moral views. I don't think society values have a big place on a sporting field myself. It's about effective club/list management.
Assuming the vast majority of us are in agreement we need to be ruthless to turn our greatclub around...What is the definition of us being ruthless to achieve this?
Because this track of fast fixes and patches and being seduced by big name players concerns me.
