What we are missing

some might disagree, but i think staff has got a bit of grunt about him... hes not affraid to throw one in and make our opponents wary of his presence. i think that big of mongrel in him is great. if only he wasnt so old.

what we need is someone who the opposition know is coming... if you get them scared before they are on the field then we are already one up. no matter what your thoughts are on pickett, everyone knows hes on the field, everyone knows hes gonna hit you if your their to be hit, and it adds an element of doubt in their mind whether or not to go put their head over the bull.

another such player who had this grunt was tim flemming, his skills and footy smarts on the other hand were non-existant, but you knew that he would go hard, and you knew that the opposition knew what he was about.

atm im not sure who will step up and play this role. its one thing to take on your opposition but how much better would it be when you've got shepherds like that of hodge and pickett! now i'de like to see that week in week out.

You may think Pickett only takes out blokes who aren't looking, and when he's struggling for form, he does. But when he's in good touch, he's physical without being a sniper.
And at the moment the Dees are really being dealt the good stuff by Byron.
How long it lasts is another question - but I'll enjoy it while it does.

Totally agree interested with your thoughts on Pickett. He has cleaned up his act up aswell. He holds a premiersip medalion, a Norm Smith medal & very worthy on the day & that is something I wish we had at RFC & crave to see agan & again.

Melb picked up a cheap player that will pay dividends for them.

The only player that others fear in the current team is Stafford's elbows & knees. ;D

100% agree I had initially to note flemming but deleted it (reason for late post) as he is not a current player. But was thinking along the same lines. Loved Flemo as a player because of his attack on the ball but his skill errors were his demise in being delisted. Was a turnover king.

The teams that have done well over the years have had at least one hard man, one to put the fear of God into opposition players eg:

Essendon, Johnsons
Brisbane, Brown, Scott brothers
Sydney, Hall
Geelong, Mooney
Port, Picket
St Kilda, Hamill
North Melb, Archer, Carey
Adelaide, Roo

The last hard man we had probably was Scotty Turner, (who can forget the bump on O'Donnell which invetiably turned the game for us). At the moment we do not seem to have a player or even look like having a player in the near future that can do that for us.
Surprised none have mentioned Hartigan.
I like the way he's developing and he goes at the footy as hard as anyone.
I see him as our hard nut ala the Johnson boys etc.
As he gains experience, improves further and the confidence goes up hopefully some of the brashness of those mentioned will come into his game also.

I wonder if it would be good pursuing Brown from the Dawks, I think his old man would like him to play for the Tiges and if so what would we give-up to get him.

I put Campbell Brown in the Zantuck, Soloman mould, good but too undisciplined. Hartigan is our man, a tough nutt in the making, bit like Brock Mclean. If we could get another 1 or 2 it would be great, but we need tough nutts not nutcases.

Can you tell at 17/18 weather someone is going to be an inforcer?
I know we need one now but there are other areas lacking as well
we could draft one (maybe there is one or two i.e Harts)
He could develop as the team develops

Craw this is wrongest you've ever been I think.  Yes, Picket has has a few stints where he's been out of form, like a lot of good players, But for most of his career you'll find he's been very good or red hot.

You are just extrapolating that period when he was out of form and made a few late hits and attracted heaps of media, to his whole career, very blinkered, one dimensional analysis which is plain wrong.

As for being an unworthy NS medal winner, did you watch the game?  He has an undisputed blinder of a game.  Burgoine could have won it as well like most year, but you can't say Pickett didn't deserve it.

I agree with interested, Melbourne have definately lifted their physical intensity, Byron is playing well, maybe there is a link.

Yep BIG STAN has done this this for a long time - was terrorising Mclaren of Carlton a few weeks back - I actually felt sorry for the guy getting a forearm across the throat as a getting to know you present from Stafford.

Claw is terribly wrong about most things and is just as wrong on Pickett.

He looks fit and seems to be enjoying his footy again.
Pickett's been more than a handy pick up for the Dees.
Probably not costing too much either.

Grant the white ant Thomas thinks he can win a premiership thru thuggery. Sheedy is trying to prolong his career thru it. That aspect of footy has long lost its value as an offensive weapon.

A lot of names mentioned here are not hard men just talentless or washed up thugs (how's your knee Hamill?).

Richmond is missing talent and experience not some hack who can snipe a player going for the ball. Sure I like seeing us cleaning up other players but I'm happy to have a Tambling in the side rather than a Pickett

I reckon you're half right.  Picket at the moment is answering his critics and looks back.

Days of the barely talented hitman are long gone sure, and I agree that players like Vandenberg and Fleming are simply liabilities, but you still need bulldozing hard at the ball players that inspire the team, like J Broan, Hall, Ruccuitto etc

I reckon Raines, Hartigan and Pattison have shown some signs.  Cogs too

like your nickname for Thomas, but 'Termites Thomas' sounds better.
