I made no secret of the fact that I supported the Big 4 when they stood against Casey, Miller, March etc in the Board election in 2005. I felt Casey and his supporters (Miller and March included) were taking the club in the wrong direction. Specifically, I never had confidence that Greg's recruiting and list assessments truly reflected where we were at at the time (ie. he seemed to be recruiting for a tilt at the flag, rather than rebuilding). His decision to run for the Board smacked of conflict and showed he would be found wantinmg when hard decisions were called for. Equally, I wasn't sure about Terry - but prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. But when the Casey-Miller ticket won the election, I accepted the democratic decision of the members and gave them my full support.
It is now more apparent than ever that my faith, and that of the vast majority of Tiger members, was misplaced. The Miller-Wallace experiment has not worked. These things happen in life, in business and relationships. The important thing is that once a mistake or miscalculation is identified, you correct it without delay.
It needn't be acrimonious or bitter, it just takes a level of maturity to recognise that it is over.
There are many, many good people out there - Richmond people - who are successful , but who are no longer associated with our Club. People who would be willing to come back, to contribute in the right circumstances. But the current culture is to turn them away, to mistrust them, to question their motives.
There is no Messiah (no, not even Greg Miller), no silver bullet and no white knight. There are however, many true Richmond people ready to roll up the sleeves and give back to our great, proud Club.
Is anyone prepared to ask them? Is anyone prepared to show the required leadership? If the current Board and administratuion is not, then - dare I say it - we need one that will.
Nothing that has happened over the past week has caused me to change my view.
Excellent summation AC/DC.
With Caroline Wilson adding her voice for change, it may happen sooner rather than later. The only thing that will save the Tiger hierachy is a couple of wins on end...like that's going to happen.....
