well we might not have anyone in the team with colourful or interesting names but we have a bevy players who share the same first names.

for starters theres CHRIS hyde and CHRIS newman, then theres MATTHEW richo and MATTHEW white and not forgetting ANDREW raines and ANDREW collins. What about NATHAN foley and NATHAN brown. Also DEAN polo and DEAN putt. Theres also JARROD silvestor and JARROD oakley nichols and hows this for a triple play - DANIEL jackson, DANIEL meyer and DANIEL connors.

sorry, i really need this season to hurry along :hihi

Slightly off the original topic, but...

Personally, something I hate is calling Richmond "The Richmond Tigers". It's so American - a la New York Nicks, etc.! I appreciate that there are teams whose real names are West C Eagles, Brisbane Lions, etc but we are Richmond or the Tigers, the latter being our nickname. Similarly, one hears of "the Geelong Cats, the Hawthorn Hawks", etc.

The logic of it annoys the pedantic side of me - it's a bit like saying, "Here's my friend, William Bill"!, but my main concern is the Americanism of it.

Some of the major websites use the horrible term; lots of promo material carries it; Peter Helliar said it on the radio yesterday (which surprised me) - is there a concerted push to (informally) change teams' names to this form, because they might be more appealing to children, or marketable globally? Or is it just part of the creep from an Australian vernacular into a homogenised - ie US-form - of dumbed-down global language?

What are your thoughts - like it? don't care (I accept it could just be me it irritates...)? or agree with me - if so, how can we stop it before it takes over?

dont get me started on Americanisms creeping into our society.

"the FAT side" ??? i even heard someone refer to a nappy as a "diaper" FTS ::)

Surely in Melb people would know who Richmond are, although it would depend on the Tigers, because he could have been referring to the Tigers (Melbourne Tigers, basketball) Tigers (Tassie Tigers, cricket) etc. I suppose it depends on the topic?!

Its Danny.

I dunno I reckon we have a few odd names. Angus, Cleve, Jordan, Jay, Tristian, Clayton to name a few ;)

I get annoyed when I turn to the Sports section of the paper and get attracted by a headline that has "Tiger" or "Tigers" in it only to find that it is an article about the Melbourne Tigers, the Tassie Tigers or Tiger Woods. >:(
