PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

This has been sticking with me for some time but in the wake of the recent delisting of Tom Roach and the interest surrounding the Cloke boys, I think it's a very good time to put things in perspective a little.

These guys father's were champions, but just because a player's Dad was famous all too often it seems some think their father's offspring are guaranteed the same success and deserve every opportunity if not more than others because of this.
IMO it's a romantic notion that has little place in the professionalism of the modern game.

Most juniors who have famous fathers get enough of an advantage purely by having a famous surname as they have caught the eye of recruiters and are a footy clubs marketing dream.

However last time I looked cloning humans was still illegal.
It's my belief that players should be judged purely on their footballing ability first and foremost.

If the youngster is good enough to make it in their own right great. If not bad luck and move on to the next player.

I'm interested in what others think of the father/son aspect in modern football.
