Whats more important at RFC - CHF or CHB (is *smile* in the right spot)

Solving CHF is more important.

Our immediate problem is about balancing what we have to work with. We are currently stuck with 3 lumbering types in Stafford, Simmonds and Knoble. All can ruck but none are suitable for CHF. Richo is not really a true CHF either but fires best when allowed to roam free(but not too wide). He attracts a lot of attention when he leads and players deliver the ball quckly into our forward zone. While this is happening the other tall timber like Staff and Simmonds can take advantage and are reasonably accurate converters. But we cannot play both St and Si up forward at the same time as they lack mobility. Schulz offers us that mobility and is a very good converter. He and Richo patrolling our key forward territory should put heaps of pressure on opposition defenders. That in turn creates opportunities for the likes of Brown, Pettifer, Tambling and Krakouer.

We may also see Cleve Hughes play up forward at times this season. I hope he advances enough to replace Stafford next year(assuming 2006 is his last). A forward line built around Richo, Schulz and Hughes in 2007 is something to look forward to........ and a further stepping stone towards LAF(Life after Richo).

CHB is also a concern but as someone recently pointed out our defence has held up fairly well despite plenty of pressure and flak. Our real problem has been kicking enough goals. Ray Hall stepped in as CHB last year and did much better than expected. He is versatile so can fill other roles if we can find another CHB. Playing Schulz there also has merit and is good for his development. So the way I read CHB is that Wallace will alternate between Rayzor and Sarge depending on who we are playing and also switch them around during games e.g. Schulz to CHF, and Hall into the ruck.

Yep, so until we recruit that star CHF, Patrick Bowden might do the trick for me.

50 games, 55 goals, 27 behinds (67% conversion). He's played most of his footy on the half forward line with an average, 7K, 4HB, 4M, & 1T per game. He's 24yo now, 25 in August, so he's achieved this in his early years. He's ready to click.

Pat's stats may increase due to more ground time and opportunity but is that the true test of judging his success. He fills a massive hole in our side and provides us with a different type of forward at CHF. We had no choice but to take a punt on him because we had nothing ready for CHF in 2006. I think it is a risk worth taking. A mobile target attacking the wings. He suits TW's game plan and hopefully Joel can have some influence on him. He will get first bite of the cherry and the rest is up to him.

The other thing about Bowden playing CHF is that it gives us two wildcard bigs in Hall and Sarge, we can then place these two in areas that will help us. Sarge at CHB or the goalsqaure and Hall as a Adam Goddes spare parts KKP.

Yep, agree Scoop.

The important question is..... have we already recruited him?

I dont go into the depth of data or intricacies of the young talent around Australia, or attend draft briefings, but if a young player does something of note I then backtrack and find out all I can about him. Humm and Hughes are two who have caught my eye so far this year for the Tigers.

Now star CHF recruits dont grow on trees. So for Cleve Hughes to be named as 2005 All-Australian under 18 CHF is a very big honour. In 5 years time he might be the All-Australian CHF like Matthew Pavlich, who is 5 years older, did last year. They have similar height and skill sets and hopefully Cleve will build himself up like Pav has.

If Pat Bowden can help cover CHF in the meantime then all the better. That frees up versatile tall players like Hall and Schulz more which is something we have been really lacking.

geez phanto your clutching at straws at best hes a 3rd tall option. even though hes tall he plays as a true flanker. imo hes a ready made replacement for pettrified although id rather see meyer on a flank in front of both of them.

Paddy Hall and maybe Pattison will all see time there this year I reckon.

Maybe Cleve will be able to take the CHF role in a couple of years, and stay there for 5-6 years before he goes to FF to serve the rest of his career. He certainly can kick 50 with a decent level of accuracy, and he's an awesome mark.

I think Jay will do great down back, and we need him to be.

Long term, I reckon our biggest holes are full back and chf. Hopefully that gets sorted by the end of next years draft.

I'd rather have Simmo rucking than in the forward line, he was an ordinary kick at goal at best last year and his attempts in the NAB Cup didn't exactly fill me with confidence for this season either. I think Phantom and Tango were both correct in saying that Schulz can fill either position depending on the situation. Richo will still be in the forward line whether he plays FF or CHF and Staff will spend most of his time there as well. I'm one of Ray Hall's few fans and he's shown me often enough that he can hold down CHF or CHB when he's needed to do so. Thursfield is being groomed for a key defensive position and Gaspar is not done yet. We haven't seen much of either of them, but from what I read here Hughes and McGuane both have reasonable chances of taking key forward or defensive positions in the future. P Bowden is also an useful stopgap in either defence or attack. For this year Schulz has to cement his spot and show the club that he was worth the trouble.

Whoever we have playing at CHF lets hope our players take their Richo and Brown blinkers off and start kicking it to them.

We are too predictable!
