Our immediate problem is about balancing what we have to work with. We are currently stuck with 3 lumbering types in Stafford, Simmonds and Knoble. All can ruck but none are suitable for CHF. Richo is not really a true CHF either but fires best when allowed to roam free(but not too wide). He attracts a lot of attention when he leads and players deliver the ball quckly into our forward zone. While this is happening the other tall timber like Staff and Simmonds can take advantage and are reasonably accurate converters. But we cannot play both St and Si up forward at the same time as they lack mobility. Schulz offers us that mobility and is a very good converter. He and Richo patrolling our key forward territory should put heaps of pressure on opposition defenders. That in turn creates opportunities for the likes of Brown, Pettifer, Tambling and Krakouer.
We may also see Cleve Hughes play up forward at times this season. I hope he advances enough to replace Stafford next year(assuming 2006 is his last). A forward line built around Richo, Schulz and Hughes in 2007 is something to look forward to........ and a further stepping stone towards LAF(Life after Richo).
CHB is also a concern but as someone recently pointed out our defence has held up fairly well despite plenty of pressure and flak. Our real problem has been kicking enough goals. Ray Hall stepped in as CHB last year and did much better than expected. He is versatile so can fill other roles if we can find another CHB. Playing Schulz there also has merit and is good for his development. So the way I read CHB is that Wallace will alternate between Rayzor and Sarge depending on who we are playing and also switch them around during games e.g. Schulz to CHF, and Hall into the ruck.
Yep, so until we recruit that star CHF, Patrick Bowden might do the trick for me.
50 games, 55 goals, 27 behinds (67% conversion). He's played most of his footy on the half forward line with an average, 7K, 4HB, 4M, & 1T per game. He's 24yo now, 25 in August, so he's achieved this in his early years. He's ready to click.
