Most of the discussion on the board seems to be about the priority pick and tanking. For me, I'm actually a little more interested in the negotiating power one has when dealing with gun uncontracted players at other clubs. This (in my understanding) you only get by getting the spoon.
Nick Stephens at Carlton (although at pick #2 in preseason) is probably the best example of what this can deliver. Even better if the negotiating position can be used to secure a lopsided deal early, it can be used AGAIN to secure another lopsided deal. Most people on here would be saying either Miller a) hasn't had the resources to correctly consistently pick in the draft or b) doesn't know what he is doing. On the trade front however, few could complain about Simmonds and Polak (lets hope Freo still like us) although Solomon was a near miss the other way and Fev (maybe) one that got away.
My understanding (which may be wrong) is that even if Carlton do get pick #1 in the NAB Draft, we still will have pick #1 in the pre-season draft, which uncontracted players can nominate for, and can hence we can use this as a severe bargaining position come draft time. Given our philosophy of recruit the best, and then get the rest via trades - this years trade period shapes up as pretty important.
So hypothetically speaking .. what is more important? which would you rather? An extra pick early in the draft or negotiating position A1?
