With GM throwing all these names about on the air I am suprised we have not heard anything about Roachy. Could someone in the know (or someone who has just seen them train) tell me as to whether he has done what is needed and is a walk up start and therefore doesn't need talking up the way some others do ie Limbach? Or is it becuase his time is all but up and the media spinsters would rather push him into a corner and forget about him?

Someone please clear this up for me as I am starting to turn dark and think that he was nothing but a feel good story in times of poor press.

from what i have read on here his brother has the size of papa Roach but not the skills to match as said, need further clarification

as we saw in the Coll wiz cup game early this year...

Roachy grabbed a ball stormed through the middle and kicked a super long goal. everyone was delighted with tamblings similar goal but Roachy can do it too.

Roachy, given an opportunity will be exciting, maybe not consistent, but exciting when he gets it.

the trouble is: Deledio, oakley-nicholls, Tambling, meyer, we are collecting some very classy gets in the positions that he might play.

Our depth is on the up and I'm excited...i'm joining up again

More like the size of Mamma Cass. :hihi

Roachy is on last legs this year and in my humble opinion was the next to go after Arch and Gilmore if another player needed to be delisted. He has plenty of attributes but had no confidence, and no impact last year being a bench player for Coburg and i am actually finding it difficult to find a spot for Tommy in the tigers top 25 at the minute let alone best 22.
Tommy does not have the class and poise of Bling or Meyer who are two players with the same size speed and better skills thefore young Tommy will have to adapt to filling some other role but for mine i really think young Tommy may get the flick at the end of the year if he doesnt step up.
Same goes for young Raines who has more tricks but his lack of pace may handicap him as well, although i can see Raines filling a tagging role ala Hyde through the middle, and to be honest i cant see Tommy doing that as he is not a inside type as Raines is.

agree craig, Tommy is gone at the end of the year
raines i would keep as he shows a bit - defineate replacement for chaffey or Tiva

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy.

I think in 06 he must play at least 15 games to hold his spot. The first year I thought he was a shoe in to have a reasonable life span in the game. But 05 he just treaded water pretty much.

Needs to bulk up like all young onballers but I still don't think it's ability that holds him back maybe desire?

Young Tommy has to realise that Terry is not going to give you a game just because your surname is Roach, unlike Spud the Dud. He has to find himself a niche in the side to get games. AFL is all about hard work not pedigree.

Agree. Surnames should count for ziltch. If he's good enough to get a game then all the best to him. If not he'll be one of the first to go at seasons end. I'm not confident he'll be here in '07. As has been said too many similar types coming through. All the best though Tom, now's the time to make your mark if you want a future at the RFC.

I doubt very much that is the issue.

Roach, Raines, Hartigan, Jackson et al are all essentially going for the one role - the rebounding HB flanker type - and there is only a limited amount of spots for that.

Chances are a couple of those players will be gone at the end of 2006 if someone steps up and makes the position their own next season.

Agreed.
Roach-Has pace but is very much a confidence type.Needs to improve his awareness.
Raines-Like the kid.He has a go.Unfourtantly for him he hasnt got pace.If anything he will competing to stay on the list with Foley moreso than the above mentioned.
Hartigan-Big year for Harts.Anymore injuries may see the end of him.
Jackson-I guess it comes down to a judgmental decision.will/has he improved enough in 06 to stay on the list or has he reached his full potential.

Roach I think will become a tagger - I think he did some jobs like that at Coburg???
PLUS
Didn't he have an injury (knee?)

And

Raines can read the play well (well... better than Roach) and has a nice kick (needs work.....) and that could be handy for delivery towards the forward line......

It's only my observation of Tommy that I think he lacks drive. I undrestand what your saying David, but the point I was trying to make is that you have to work hard for your position under Terry and Tom needs work harder to get into the best 22. Hard work will get him there and that will be good for Tom and the Tigers. I wish Tommy the best of luck.

I can't believe some of you are putting Harts in the gun. A terriffic player when fully fit. Just has to stop getting the niggly injuries he's had over the last couple of years.

The one player I'd be worrying about is Jacko. I think he may have been next on the list to go and don't think he's a favourite of Terry's either. Has a couple of nice tricks but essentially he's not a natural footballer. This year when he played his decision making was terrible and he's not as quick as some of you have been lead to believe IMO. I think his pace over the first few metres is not good but it's okay when he gets going.

He's the one who also needs a solid year to survive. Same as Tommy and the rest of them....

With Gilmour, Archibald, Morrison and Fletcher already delisted from the 2003 batch, besides Tuck there are still serious question marks over the remainder.  Another wasted draft perhaps?

Unlike Spud? He got about 8 games under spud and just about everyone of them was off the bench. I think one game he was on for all of 10 minutes of game time. He would have been better off at Coburg.

They played him in the backline a bit this year to improve the defensive side of his game and once he moved back towards the end of the season he was in Coburgs best a few times. Hope he'll do well this year. Good luck Tom :D

Indeed, its quite a worry. Who else was from that batch, the following I assume?

Huge season for Hartigan, Raines, Roach, Jackson

I think we need to view last year in perspective and not place to much emphasis on who played how many senior games.

It was said several times that a few of the younger guys had to learn their craft in the VFL before they would be given senior game time. Jacko and Roachy were both nominated as players that still had a bit to learn and needed development time at VFL level.

I think Plough knowing they are young with time on their side was happy to let this happen if they were making progress, which by all reports (Flood Report) they did. Whether they made the desired progress remains to be seen.

Regardless of that I still agree with most that these guys need to start making their mark this year or they may come under the spotlight. The fact that we have such a huge middle aged bracket gap may help them a little.

I think last year Terry was happy to put a few more of the "been around" group under the microscope and let the younger ones develop and learn what is required of them to play at the elite leve.

Time will tell who has or can make that next big step.
