What's wrong with a contest?

Watching the Adelaide/Saints game last night I got to wondering....what is wrong with kicking to a contest??

Adelaide in that first quarter handballed constantly, as they obviously did not want to kick to anyone except a team mate on their own. If the ball is kicked to a contest then surely the best mark or best skilled player will get it, or at least a "crumber" will swoop onto it like a seagull on to a piece of fat?? Why are we now having this mindset of only kicking to a uncontested player??

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems the days of long kicking, even if to a contest are long gone. Kick to a team mate on his own or handball all over the place until someone is free is the mindset today. I was screaming at the TV....."kick the bloody thing, and I might add, I hear that at the games as well."

i would suggest its cos the opposition (in this case the saints) are pushing no's back therefore a kick to a contest isnt a kick to a 1on1 or 2on2 more likely a 5on2 or similar. if you then match the team pushing back you end up with a very clogged forward line and a very open backline.

Spot on graystar1 - my TV and family needs earmuffs for all the screaming I do at it when I'm watching the crap that is supposed to be football nowadays. Fair dinkum this "keepings off" business is hybrid basketball and NOT FOOTBALL as I have always known it until now. The next thing we know the rules committee will bring in a 'time out' rule and perhaps allow blokes to throw the ball to one another and not handpass (this might already be in place). Let the skilful and hard at it footballers back in to the game BRING BACK THE CONTEST!!!

tell the players laying 150 tackles a game (obvioulsy not a richmond game, but a game like last night) its basketball.
tell the players getting tackled 150 times a game its basketball.
tell steve baker, coughing blood and vomiting, its basketball.

are you suggesting the rules committee should change laws to make more contests? or coaches should tell their players to kick to contests cos the fans like it?

you reckon abletts not skillful and hard? selwood? hodge? goodwin? edwards? kerr? etc etc.

1. How many tackles? If the way the game is going ie. Keepings off no-one and no team will be able to lay anywhere near 150 tackles
2. Yes - cos the fans "want it" not just like it
3. No. Of course there are skilful and hard players but not enough and definitely not enough Richmond players

IIRC the tackles per game is actually increasing. If there is less kicking to contests then it means more chasing the opposition with the ball and more tackling.
