Just wondered what people thought of the decision where Gehrig marked the ball inside 50 and was marked by Newman. Newman put his hands up rather than impede Gehrig and risk a 50 metre penalty only to have Gehrig shove him in the chest and run off and kick a goal. it did not appear that Gehrig went back or was made to go back and kick over the mark.

What was Newman to do as it would have been highly likely if he grabbed Gehrig he would have got 50 awarded against him as he was not in the marking contest.

Should Gehrig have been forced to go back over the mark given that play had stopped albeit momentarily.

Whats your thoughts.

Although on the other hand I did notice a couple of our players get caught out in similar situations where we seemed to switch off after a mark or free kick only to have a Saints player run on and create a play. Notice Harvey do this to Howat a couple of times. Inexperience maybe.

Great spot, Gus.

This season a player is allowed to take more than one step over the mark without it being called play-on. The Newman situation was a classic example of the fatal flaw in this interpretation-- which was never explained or justified. It was just implemented.

I don't think it was a close call. Gehrig was 100% off. But if Newman had tackled him it would have been fifty because he may have been slowing down from the mark.

I don't know why a player should get a free two metre protected run just for taking a mark. It's wrong.

On the Raines one, as you could see from the replays, from one angle (the umpire's) it looked like Raines was holding.

This IMO was totally player error. Riewoldt humiliating a smaller, less experienced opponent.

It's simple, you either hold your opponent (it's fine if you can get away with it) or you don't. There is no limbo where you just play handies with him- you might give up a soft free kick and that's unforgivable.

BTW it's okay to give up a free kick as long as the recipient can't take it. If Raines had given up the same free for belting Riewoldt that would have been a good free kick. Fine.

Soft frees are an indictment of the player- not of the umpire.

But Raines was nowhere near as bad as Pathettifer. How does a bloke get reported for waving his elbow at an opponent? Fine to get reported. But don't apologise. If you want to be nice about it send the bloke a straw afterwards to make sure he doesn't starve.

Getting reported waving elbows in front of umpires. Should be fined by the club for insufficient violence IMO.

Fair enough but geez it was soft. :pop
Riewoldt played for it like there was no tomorrow despite the fact he could have easily yanked his arm away.
Wouldn't have happened once in our game when there was a genuine contest and a bit of body on body contact with one's eye's focussed firmly on the ball and not the umpires whistle.

They've turned it into *smile* netball. :frustration

One problem we at Richmond have with a programme of violence, which we desperately need IMO, is that Wallet can't implement one.

He had a rep at Footscray following a number of savoury incidents. If the Tiges try any of that stuff the media will be all over him and us.

It's a shame. We could build the reputations of a couple of our youngsters in this spoonish year.

For example, wouldn't it have been nice if Raines had punished Riewoldt after every one of his sixteen(?) marks? Even if he risked attracting the attention of the umps? Maybe Nicks' a bit slower to get up after the fifth. Maybe he doesn't take many more.

How would it have been if Pathettifer had sniped Gehrig with an elbow during the play? A real one? Or if Jackson had started a stink with Montagna as he definitely should IMO?

Footscray, a light outside team, was able to throw a larger shadow because of its rep for dirty play. We can't.

On another thread we discussed the fact that every team except Richmond has an enforcer. The closest we get is Hall and and potentially Jackson.

Tis very sad.

He's mad too.

Apparently a room-mate of his came home late one night.....the place was in darkness so he assumed that no one was home.
Opened the front door and put the light on and sitting in the corner of the lounge, just staring into space, was Gehrig.

:o

Who the hell does that?
