when i was a kid

we drove in Dad's noisy red ford falcon to VFL park.  much to my disgust.  i liked our previous car. a gold corolla because it had a tape player.  i requested the sound of music and abba all of the time. dad sold the corolla for the ugly falcon.  i was not impressed.

i wrote in yellow and black texta the words "Geoff Raines" and the number "4", cut them out and stuck them onto the back of my Tigers badge with the VFL logo

i ripped them off when raines went to eddiewood

the same badge is on my richmond scarf today

when we won the premiership in '80 I drew a picture of a tiger eating a magpie and my mum put it in the window of our giftware shop

i got 20 cents every saturday to buy a massive bag of mixed lollies

i watched the Big league/Saturday night replay on saturday night

mum and I would eat red saveloys in bread on a saturday afternoon and listen to the football on the radio, or I would get a drink in a bottle, with a straw at the local footy, and go and have afternoon tea in the club rooms

i would watch world of sport on sunday mornings.  i loved watching lou and jack.  the words patra orange juice and ballantyne's cheese are burned into my brain forever. the o'toole's blitzed the woodchop

I love this one. One of the best

thanks gs1!   ;D

I loved the 70's, early 80's.  it was a great time to be a kid.

no fear,  just footy.

didn't get to do the saturday morning footy routine though as I had no brothers.  but dad played.

remembered him playing cricket more though.  the cricket afternoon teas were just as yummy as the footy ones!

When I was a kid

Every Saturday was spent at the local footy, 10am to 6pm
Away games meant getting squished in the car with as many of the players as would fit.
The only soft drink in the clubroom bar was lemon or bitter lemon.
The smell of ciggie smoke mingled with linament and beer that spilt on the chipboard floor.
The lights from the grandstand didnt even light up half the ground, when the fog came down it made it very eerie while we waited for dad to finish his post game beers and post game analysis.

When I was a kid.

You are most welcome Hally . Funny about the fear factor though. With all the knivings, general violence, etc., etc., fear has grown more's the pity. This once wonderful Country and State now has to live with it. Even prior to the 70's and 80's, to be a kid was just fun!!

When I was a kid I went to the footy expecting to win. I didn't go with fear or a dread of losing.

When we played the lowly teams, we didn't let them find form and run over us, we buried them mercilessly.

If we lost, I didn't take it hard because I thought we would win the next week...It was never the start of a 10 game losing streak.

When I was a kid other teams were afraid and hated us.

It was great when I was a kid.

Under 16 on Sunday arvo ( Ruck rover changing fullforward ). Sat morning Under 18 ( Wing ) Sat arvo Seconds ( Back pocket ). All on the same weekend, retired when i moved to the big smoke age 17 not having a team.

when I was a kid...I got into the ground for nothing - until I turned 6.

I used to sit up on my dad's shoulders and hold onto his head. Had the best view at the ground. It made me about as tall as Roy Wright, when I was a kid...

when i was a kid

you didnt have to pay to get into
practice matches
and they sometimes didnt keep the score and
sometimes that had three quarters and
sometimes they had six quarters
and we played blokes in their 20s
from our regional zones
and their families came down to watch

When I was a kid

Every footy season seemed a bit like 2007 for Richmond.

When Len Smith became coach, things started looking up.

By 1967 I was no longer a kid and it was the start of a new era.

I reckon another new era isn't that far off.

I try to forget when I was a kid my father used to take me to the football nearly every second week.

Unfortunately he barracked for South Melbourne and we lived not far from Lakeside Oval.
