PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Another boredom breaker.

I have began to think that football is rapidly becoming a hybrid game combining Aussie Rules, Basketball and the Galeic game and the ramifications this has on the style of football played. Well not exactly the style because we could debate for days about where the game is heading but lets take a look at the past.

I would be interested to hear PRE thoughts on when they thought football was it's peak as far as style of game, skill, umpires effect on the game, genuine football intelligence( I think the large majority of guys on AFL lists have very few footballing smarts) toughness that produced the brand of football that made the best viewing for you. The period in time where you most enjoyed watching football. All depends on age and era's but I really don;t think the game is at a apex at the moment. It's great to watch but how many times do you look at a game and say to yourself "this is like circle work" or "how dumb was that".

For me the early to mid 90's were superb. Carey, Voss, Hird, Ablett, Diesel were firing and were true footballers in the senses of the word. The football seemed to have a lot more contests and did move slower then today but thought the skills were better. The game was pure football that had evolved into something that made a great spectale.

Welcome your thoughts.
