When Will We See Real Success

Harry said:
IF (and a bif IF) we nail every draft from now on ensuring we address all of our structure weaknessess and draft well rounded players, then we might see some sustained success when our current kids from the past 2 drafts turn around 24 - 25. That is around 2015 the earliest.

If we don't nail each and every draft by (a) maximising the number of picks, (b) covering our entire structure and (c) recruiting well rounded players, and equally develop them properly then we will be treading water and our current 28 year drought will turn into 38 years quicker than you can say "Bloody hell tiges, man up !!".

Who would have thought that after 1995, we'd play finals only once in the next 12 years?
top post harry.

Agree with Skills, we need to recruit naural guns who will make an instant impact (an inexact science I agree).

These are the players premiership sides are built around. After this the science of drafting comes into it.

There are precious few players who can influence a game these days (or "win it off their own boot" in 80's speak). Why else do you think Carlton persists with Fevola, or West Coast "hid" Ben Cousins for so long?

Richo, Brown and Foley are the only current players I feel that are capable of this. Even though he has the ability, I don't think Deledio has the hunger or desire to make the sacrifices required to join this category (though I'd love to be proven wrong).

These are the players we need to be really successful.

Don't tell me he has been infected by the cancer already!

I agree you have to choose the talent. But we simply have to get better at developing our kids. We have been woefully inadequate in that area for a long time.

What scares me is that many people see the appointment of Craig Cameron to oversee recruiting as being the answer to our prayers. I don't care how good he is, his work will only get so far without a better system for developing the players he gets us.

unlike geelong we have wasted 4 drafts in that time.2002 2003 2005 and 2007.

C'mon claw wasted 2007 disagree entirely, Cotchin, Rance, Putt, Gourdis, Morton and McMahon, ok i know u dont like Mcmahon or even rate him fair enough each to their own, most media people had RFC at A or A+ in the draft and trading period, now had we picked up young selwood or even pears/collier at pic 19 i think it would've been A+.

Out of those 6 pics, five are kids 3 key talls (uve been screaming for talls), 1 gun midfielder and a skilful forward who can play tall.

Cartledge as insurance in the rookie draft is worth the punt and collard too, a talented goal sneak but as a rookie we'll see if he has the desire to take his game to the next level to senior football in 09'.

as far as im concerned morton and mcmahon are damaged goods in which we traded away picks 19 and 35 which should have been used on promising kids in the nd. the 2007 nd we used just 3 nd picks that is a waste. 2005 we used just 3 nd picks another waste. 2002 and 2003 when we should have been busy in full on rebuild mode we were busy alright. trading away our early picks. i went crook at the time and im still going crook now.

of the three nd picks we took i would give them an A. For the trade period rookie draft and to a lesser degree the psd i would give them an F.

Its easy. When every player on the list has the attitude and perseverence of Foley and King. Only a coach like Chocco or Worsfold or even Craig could make that happen.

Too many people think that having a skilled player is enough, well it aint. I am hoping our round 1 performance is the start of a new direction. I have never seen a tigers side more hard at it or play for each other like they did. I dont particularly care if i am lauded or laughed at here, i firmly believe that confidence and belief are major problems at our club. Not saying skill or development or list management isnt a big problem either, but you gotta work with what you got.

You really are an all-or-nothing kind of guy, aren't you, Claw? Are you not willing to consider that the 3 nd picks might be, say, a B overall, the trades a D, the rookie draft a C and the PSD a B?

Things are rarely as extreme as you perceive them. Like everything else, the truth is somewhere in the middle. For example, one of your pet whipping boys, young Pettifer may very well be a long way from being cut from the same cloth as Glenn Archer. Nonetheless, he still has many qualities that make him a valuable footballer, they just happen to be qualities that you don't value very highly. He takes a good mark, kicks accurately, is a safe kick for goal, runs hard, presents repeatedly and has a knack for kicking goals late in a game.

Yep TOT70, thats the crux of it. If you are looking for 22 perfect players you are always going to be disappointed. Accept the weaknesses people have and decipher whether the strengths outweigh them or not. There is no black and white.

Sometime on a Wednesday, it will be drizzling and overcast, but a nice pot of tea should cheer everyone up!

the thing is i look at pettrified and ask CAN WE DO BETTER. The obvious answer to that is yes, but it wont happen if we sit back on our hands and do nothing about it. imo we have a pettifer type in the forward line. his name is brown and hes in a different league. theres no room for both imo.
