Here's some food for thought, and in many respects exposes where the blame for our current lack of success really lies.
Below i've listed all the players at each club drafted from 1997 - 2002.
This is the period Geelong built their premiership team from. Not only do we hve the least numbers, but when you look at the quality of names (bar a few) we gained virtually nothing during this period.
You will also notice how long players have been developing on opposition lists that you may have thought were drafted only a few years ago. Typically players break out around 4 or 5 seasons after being drafted - though there are a few freaks (Franklin etc) that lift the bar for all others (unfairly) as they are by far the exception rather than the rule.
The Frawley years have put a massive hole in our list that can't be fileld over night. Interestingly, StKilda have the most players in this "Cherry Ripe" catagory, but two things are happening here. 1 - A lot of their more important players in this list can't keep out of the medical room, and 2 - their current recruiting philosophies are seeing them develop a 'list gap' much like the one existing at Richmond. They are recruiting a lot of mature age guys eg King, M.Gardner, Rix M.Clarke, Ackland, McGough, etc who have question marks over their durability which may further compound a problem that is already causing this club strife. Some of these are already gone. In addition to this, a lot of the youth drafted in 2005 & 2006 has already been delisted. Their list will be interesting in 4 or 5 years time!
