Where's Trent Knobel at?

Spida looked pretty useless tonight.
Not sure he is enjoying his footy at the moment. I know he has had a foot injury, but his heart doesn't look in it.
If you want to look at a player that has come from a culture of losing, look no further than Spida. His win/loss ratio over the years of playing with St Kilda and then Hawthorn must be shocking. No wonder he might be considering playing with a successful side for a change.

That counts us out then :hihi

Agree.  I'd actually rather have Knobel than Spida.

When fully fit, I still think Knobel is a better ruckman than Simmonds. Simmo probably does more than make up for the difference around the ground, but it's no coincidence that arguably our two best victories of the year (Adelaide and Geelong) came with Knobel in the side giving us plenty of first use in the centre.

Our best performances last year also came when Knobel was fit and firing - he played the last half of the year under an injury cloud and it was certainly a factor in why we dropped off so much.

He's a vastly underrated player...will be around next year and if he can get his body right, he'll help to make us a lot more competitive. With any luck he can get back before season's end.

I actually thought Knobels around the ground play improved quite a bit last year. Can't see him being traded with Staff retiring, Patto not yet ready and Graham spending another year on the rookie list.

Can somebody please clear up a couple of points where he's at?

1. Injury wise
2. Contract wise

Poor Trent appears to have had a shocking run with injuries this year.
Been about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike this season after a promising '05.
If his contract expires this year he may well be moved on.

What's his future with us, does he have one?

Thoughts.

I hope he doesn't - again can thump a ball, but apart from that totally and utterly useless around the ground (is there a player in the whole AFL that is as one dimensional as Knobel?). Even a club as deficient in ruck talent as St Kilda didn't loose any sleep in letting him go when they offered to pay him what he actually deserved. Certainly doesn't have a role in any future successful Richmond side and the sooner we find another ruckman, one that can actually 'play' football, the better.

Peter Street is very comparable stats-wise (but is a bit better at kicking goals), and the Dogs haven't suffered too badly with him holding down first ruck. Using Knobel off the bench while Simmo takes a breather will work for us in today's game.

It is because Trent is a very solid ruckman that he is likely to come under consideration for trade.

At 27 he is pretty much in his prime but we have Simmo, the probable All Aust ruckman and a vastly improved Patto from whom we can expect a further improvement in 07. Throw in Graham and the possibility of Leuenberger or Sellar in the draft, plus the quality of this draft, and the need for clubs who are there or thereabouts like St Kilda and the Doggies, to bolster their ruck strength and I think the case for trading Trent is very strong.

Won't be there in 07 simply because he is as good as he is.

Perhaps during the interim. But call me a starry-eyed optimist or simply old-fashioned, but I like my ruckman to actually contribute around the ground. Compared to every other field position, sometimes we seem to have such low expectations of ruckman. If Simmonds can both ruck and play football, I don't see why we should in the long run settle for a number two ruckman that can't do the same (and here's hoping Pattison will eventually prove to be that player!!!).

I too have high hopes for Patto.

It's very difficult to keep two ruckmen of near equal ability on your list, simply because the one playing second fiddle will seek greater opportunities elsewhere. Knobel is ideal as he knows (or should know) his limitations as an all-round player, but gives the opposition no respite as he is rarely beaten in taps, even by the better ruckmen. Some other clubs use pinch-hitters (Blake, Skipper, Petrie, Polak) in the hope that they can break even, whereas in Knobel we have a genuine ruckman as relief. Jolly and McDonald are hardly devastating ballgetters either but have played a role in recent premiership successes.

However as stated earlier his value is nought unless he is available for selection.

waste of a pick up

why would you recruit a ruckman on a 5 yr contract then pick up another ruckman with your 16th pick in a draft and then get a mid-20's ruckman in the PSD in the same yr?

because you go for hawthorn and are a troll and we are richmond fans :police:

Knobel to Carlton if he goes anywhere.

Doubt it - they've had enough of these sort of ruckmen I would have thought (see Deluca, Bryan, McLaren, and add a couple of Irish boys who actually perform marginally better).
