Astute interpretation Halsey and Posh

just to clarify and explore further .......

currently Geelongs 2021 first round pick doesn't exist.

so they've traded something that doesn't exist?

that in itself isnt a complex legal concept, options and futures have been traded for as long as Joseph the carpenters marriage went unconsummated.

so you reckon, by the letter of AFL law,

Richmond have actually traded pick 20 in 2020 for the first pick in the 2021 draft that is allocated to Geelong?

a hypothetical: Geelong FC become so bereft of confidence and judgment after being repeatedly demoralised by Richmond FC, that they sought to gain and edge to overcome them and engaged a sport science 'weapon' and began a performance enhancing drugs program for season 2021. They get caught and the AFL suddenly becomes decisive, accountable and transparent (yeah, ok, I accept that is more science fiction than a hypothetical), strip Geelong of all premiership points, relegating them to last position on the AFL ladder, and prohibits Geelong from participating in the 2021 draft.

Would Richmond receive the first pick that Geelong never had allocated and were not entitled to?
Incorrect

Geelong's 2021 1st round pick 'Did' exist as every other clubs 1st round picks exist every year as they have rights to a 1st round selection like all other clubs do its just not allocated which pick it is but they did have 1.

When they trade it they no longer have the right to that pick but the club who has traded for it owns that pick and that is allocated to that team but is tied here geelong finish on the ladder

So if they are stripped of a first round pick for cheating we get nothing.

They don't have a 1st round pick to be stripped of. They would likely take their 2022 1st round pick in that instance.

I'm not sure whats so hard to get, Geelong do not own that pick any longer. Its outs but tied to where they finish so if there are any punishments etc, then they do not have that pick to lose.

Agree. we now have the pick tied to the Cats finishing position. no matter what the Cats do to try to cheat their way to beating us that pick will not be taken off us.

Nga is gone now isn't it?

All NGA players are open to all clubs in the first round starting next year. After the first round clubs can bid as normal and aligned clubs can match.

Of course this doesn't apply to the northern academies or F/S prospects.

That's my understanding anyway. I think it's still yet to be finalised.

Long long way to go. But the chatter is strong about how good this crop is.

The 2nd’s excite me just as much. Sonsie looks fantastic.

I know it looks like we’re set to go all in on what many are saying is a super strong pool of talent, but I wonder how many picks we will actually end up with. The spectre of loading up on picks for a big trade looms large too I reckon.
Personally not sure on which would be the better way to go.

For mine it's the perfect opportunity to freshen the list with young talent and a view to the future.
Not sure we're going to have the cap space to be players in the free agency market. Quality mature players are gunna b seriously expensive and we've got a raft of decent young players are gunna b looking for decent pay rises as they hit their peak, plus a couple of elite's with some back ended. Got a feeling this would absorb a fair slice of the projected cap space opening up as Bash, Jaaack, Cotch, Shedda, Assa, Lamblett n Grub start to fade towards retirement over the next few years.
We barely touched the draft n trade this year n with almost a double up of young talent available at the end of next year, to my thinking double picks in each of the first three rounds would be massive toward bringing through a future generation to support and lift all the young talent we already have.
Proven over the last four years with all the key injuries we've had at times during the seasons that you can never have to much depth.

Agree - I hope we go hard in the draft.

Literally and figuratively.

We've got draft picks in the bank, I reckon we're into someone.
Agreed.

Possibly a gun midfielder from somewhere.

We will still be able to hit the draft also and try nab a couple of high end quality junior KPP as we need a couple to take over from JR8 and Dave when they retire.
