Re: Who played for the jumper?

I like how people have noted some of the young players playing for the jumper.

Patto, King, Foley, Thursty. :clap

Re: Who played for the jumper?

Normally I would say Bowden plays for the jumper - one reason being a son of a premiership player, but he is clearly in a bit of a hole at the moment and needs to recapture his Tiger spirit.

Re: Who played for the jumper?

This raises an interesting question I have often wondered about. Does anyone play for the jumper any more? Don't they just play for the pay-packet?

I could well imagine that sons of former players (Richo, Bowden, Raines) may well do so. But what about the rest? Many years back clubs went out and found players themselves and gave them a chance, so it's fair to say the players might have felt as if they were obliged to give something back. But now they sit around a table and get picked off like a smorgasbord. Many of them know they will get picked and it's just a question of who by.

Compare Foley and Deledio. Foley was given a chance by Richmond and most likely feels he owes them something. But what about Deledio? He was always going to get picked up very early so it could be argued that the obligation in his case is more the other way around.

By definition, the very early draft picks in this system go to a poorly performing club. Do you think they feel an obligation to the sport (as opposed to the club) in the sense that they have a gift, and it's their obligation to play for a struggling club, or do you think they would try to last a few years until their contract runs out and try to get to a decent club? Not finger-pointing at Deledio here - the argument applied to any high draft pick.

Then again, Judd has just about done the reverse.

Discuss.

Re: Who played for the jumper?

I find it difficult to believe any of those players do not put in to some extent, there are certainly different levels of effort. So I voted for the lot. ;D

Re: Who played for the jumper?

Brown DOES NOT play for the jumper and n e one who wants to argue with me i'm ready >:D

Richo bleeds for it and i also believe Bowden also does

I agree with Brown, I believe Richo bleeds for it but that doesn't excuse him for some of the things he does or tries to do. Bowden if he bleeds for it then show all of us but honestly I think out of the 22 on the park last Sunday, perhaps 5 or 6 actually looked like they give a stuff, the rest you could throw a blanket over.

Geez Petrified and Bowden scored votes, geez still seems there is much work to be done to bring sanity and sense to the worlds of a few unfortunates out there. 8)

i vote for sarge , regardless of some opinions , i feel sarge has got what it takes to make it (so does prada ) but its a bit like the taylor and roach situation of the 80's , the MCG is not bigger enough for them and Richo , so considering age , sorry RICHO MAN the time is right to wave goodbye and ride into the sunset alla barge Taylor , at least with RICHO his best is behind him and he wont haunt us for years to come alla Brian Taylor.

bowden and brown both play for themselves, closely followed by pettifer with johnson & tivva not up to it and richo sadly slipping away

I voted for Sarge, amongst others, as well. He was our most effective forward against North and one of the better defenders against Collingwood after Polak went off.

I believe we have a culture of mediocre players going through the motions, passing Go then collecting massive pay cheques. I wonder if our regular losses eat into the pride in Richmond's heritage.

I'm not Rex's biggest fan but loved what he said during the game againt Collingwoood. It was only the second quarter and he said (not word for word) "For goodness sake lift your heads Richmond. You're wearing the guernsey". That brings me back to my desire to get Tommy Hafey to speak to the kids about our history and the honour they have.

I haven't voted on this poll because I haven't seen the game but I did notice in the paper Richo had something like 13 possessions for around 50% accuracy. I think Matty can often be used as a barometer for our performances, if he kicks the first couple of golas he's unstoppable, but despite what appears o the stats sheet to be an ordinary day for him nobody could ever accuse him of not playing for the jumper.

I think people are confusing this poll with one about who played well or who should go or their favourite player.
Richo was selfish last weekend, no doubt about it. Therefore he did not play for the jumper. He was not a team player, so no vote.
Matty White got a vote even though he had stuff all impact. He chased and chased and did what I consider to be the team thing, no standing there thinking someone else will do it.
Only gave about 5 or 6 votes, sadly not too many playing for the jumper last week. All 22 got paid for that pathetic effort. Ka-ching!

Once upon a time, when the game was semi-professional, it was fair enough that players played for the jumper. However in these days of the smaller list, the VFL affliiates, the draft, the meat market week and so forth, i think that most players play for themselves. The clubs that can harness this energy and desire are successful and the ones that can't, fail.

Not one mention of Moore, which surprises me as being @ the game he didn't stop all day keeped working hard on and off the ball. I would say he was for me anyway the BOG for the tiges. Always choppin out Thristy.
