Who replaces Rance

Shame the Saints picked up Marsh.

Could have been a handy pick up mid season after playing in our VFL team.

Garthwaite will be the replacement but not yet.

Only played a half yesterday in practice game and his first hitout for the year and very much underdone. Had limited pre season.

KMac maybe a option for a few weeks to play back.

Probably need Balta to help Nank in ruck.

Get Balta to the backline, and bring in either Moore or Chol to take Baltas spot on the interchange.

Both Moore and Chol have the flexibility to pinch hit in the ruck and go forward or back.

Can’t remember been so flat after a win , however driving home today, I was thinking not so much who replaces Rance but how do they still stay a super defensive unit ? I like Balta as a back man so it’s a bit left field , but I’d consider bringing in CCJ to help in the ruck and the odd float forward and have Balta play predominantly back. In saying that I think Balta will continue to play the role he did last night and Garthwaite will come into the back half when fit.

A worry for me with a Garthwaite coming into the team is his not unlike Astbury on the attacking front, that would then mean we have 3 players who are pretty much straight defensive players Grimes is the other, ad to that , that Houlis 31 and Shorts a bit off the boil, going to have to be a bit creative I think

I think we juggle the lineup, put Balta back there till Garth is fit and ready and bring in more speed for Rances spot(either castag, Bolton, Baker)

This will hurt us in the next month or two but by the middle of the year we would of worked it out. Rather it happen now than round 17 gives us time to change things up.

P.S I’m still very pessimistic about Astbury being our main key defender now.............. :-\

no way would i play Balta in the backline. He is not ready.

Either Garthwaite, or just play an extra medium like Oleg or Kamdyn and let Grimes and Vlaustin do Ranc role.

I agree.

Its Garthwaite or an extra runner.

Could be a great chance for Ellis to redeem his career.

I wouldnt move Kamdyn off the wing. His defensive work off the ball is massive.

Yeah it doesn’t need to be like for like, folks are being too rigid in their thinking.

We need another runner against Collingwood.

I'd have Balta down back to give us the athleticism and height to get the intercept marks. I don't think Rance has been our number 1 lockdown defender for some time (Astbury has), as it enables Rance to help out on defence.

Give Garthwaite 3 weeks at VFL level to get match fitness up, then bring him in. By that time I anticipate Balta will be hitting the wall and need a spell anyway.

he's a completely different type of player. Astbury is your stay at home defender who plays on the gorilla, while Rance uses his footy smarts to predict where the incoming ball is gonna land and tries to get to it. Astbury is not an appropriate player to play the Rance role. Grimes is the man. and he would have learnt plenty off Rance over the years.

Im over the flat spot

And actually pretty excited by the opportunity

For garth to become a premiership defender

And Vlastuin to make us all stoked we passed on Grundy.

Think its Vlastuins time to shine. AA.

Another silver lining is it takes some expectation off us.

Bookies already got pies as favourites.

That *smile* is gold

Grimes was a terrific interecept mark early on before becoming a lockdown type. Not sure he has Rance's athleticism but if someone is going to "float", he's the obvious choice.

The defensive side of the defence will be fine, the attacking side of the defence is what will be weekend, win the ball in the centre is how we cover Rance.

Balta has contributed very well as a ruck forward wouldn't change this one one bit
Id rejig the backline for a few weeks till Garthwaites ready
B Broad Astbury Grimes
HB Houli Vlastuin Short
Also have ruck playing back when needed filling holes after centre bounce

Someone else may emerge from a VFL, WAFL, SANFL team in the early part of this season.

Maybe it will be a younger player who missed one of the last three drafts? Williamstown will probably unearth another gem. We also have Hugh Beasley playing in the VFL.

There is a great opportunity for a young key defender now. Maybe even for a ruckman. We can deploy Balta into defence and go with a genuine ruck forward.

Actually, short-term, if Garthwaite is not match fit yet, I would replace Rance with Markov. He gives extra run out of the backline.

It highlights an anomaly in the process. We now have to wait 10 weeks before we can draft a player to fill Rances spot. If a player is injured for the season a club should be able to replace them ASAP.

Anyway I assume we’d look at replacing him with a KPP from the state leagues. Ethan Phillips from Port Melbourne or Harry Nolan from Coburg as examples. And again I’d guess we’d try and draft from the VFL to minimise the disruption to the player.

Disagree. All teams should have the same opportunity at the same time via a draft otherwise the system is open to abuse. Good teams should be able to cover the loss of any player at least until the middle of the season when the draw takes place. And if you can't then that's bad player list management.

Didn't Garp do a heavy contested session against Lynch last week? He's done the work to make sure he was ready to play n then got game time in the magoos yesterday, should be near enough ready to go, so adjust the experienced players a tad n Garp should get to put the hand up for a job next week.
